    Windshield Replacement

My 1970 coupe needs a new winshield. After searching the forum, I found that Pilkington supplys correct replacement glass.

Now I am indeed of an installer. Does anyone have a recommendation for an installer in the Northern Delaware, S.E. PA area?

    Thanks,

    Gene Ventura

P.S. Does the T-Top support reveal piece need to be removed to replace the windshield?

    Re: Windshield Replacement

    Hi Gene.

I think it would be inaccurate to state that Pilkington makes a "correct" replacement. I believe that while close, there are some differences between your original/factory windshield and any replacement on the market today. I've heard (I think) that replacements are made from thinner glass - not sure on this. The ASI scribe and the tint band on replacements are different than original as well. There may be other differences, so I'll rely on the pack here to jump in.

All that said, I agree that from my research as well as from what others here have posted throughout the years, is that while "not typical for factory production", Pilkington is a good choice.

I may be wrong but I thoguht I read that some glass installers can get the Pilkington glass for you and then they'd install it. Anyone?

      Don,

I was not aware that installers could get Pilkington glass. I will check locally to see if anyone deals with them.

I will look around for while to see if there is anyone who may have a decent original windshield to sell, but I imagine that will be very difficult to find.

      Thanks for your reply,

      Gene

Again Gene, I'm not sure that they can get Pilkington glass. I'm hoping that some other posters will either confirm or correct. Gentlemen?

Does anyone have a photo of the windshield damming strip from an original car? I am hoping to see the cloth adhesive to determine if it is possible to replicate it.

          Thanks,

Gene...I can provide the name of the guy that did a nice job installing the windshield in my '70 roadster earlier this year. He lives in Cambridge, MD on the Eastern Shore if you want to travel that far. He may be willing to come to you...Clark

              Clark,

I would like to speak with him about it. If he is willing to come to to me that would be fantastic.
Unfortunately I just removed the windshield today, so driving the car that distance would be a challenge.

Please send me a private message with the details.

              Thanks for your reply,

              Gene

I removed the cracked windshield today. Progress, baby steps.

What I discovered is in the photos below. Is there a way to repair the rusted out sections that does not involve replacing the entire upper section of the windshield frame?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

                Thanks,

                Gene Ventura

I will let others with direct experience share theirs -- I have only seen the repairs in progress; but you have a lot of work to do before your car is ready for a new windshield. I hope you got the old one out in one piece so it can serve as a template for the opening.

Hello,The work on the windshield frame is almost complete and I am about to order a new windshield. Does anyone have a photo of the LOF logo and date codes from a 1970? I have tried searching the archive but it returns a fatal error message when I try to access it.Thanks,Gene Ventura

Gene, I'll try to get a shot of my original glass. Sept 70 build.I'd be curious what you did to take care of the windshield frame as I will eventually have to do the same thing someday.Plus, keep in mind I'm always looking for tech articles for our newsletter. Some pictures and a paragraph or two go a long way..............Tom

Hi Tom,As Harry Callahan once said " A man has got to know his limitations." I had the frame replaced by County Corvette. (Yep, that's gonna leave a mark. ) I will be making notes and taking photos of my replacement of the wiring harnesses with an eye toward a future tech article. Thanks for your reply,Gene

Just a FYI I just ordered a windshield from Pilkington last week they will need a commercial address with access to a fork lift to deliver too.
