    cigarette ighter

This is a simple question. I bought a new lighter for my 63 vett, when I push it in to test it it does not click into position (I remember from the old days, you push it in and wait for it to snap out once ready). Any suggestions? should I replace with a new lighter or could it be the housing in the dash that accepts the lighter, is there anyway to test....I'm going to a NCRS judging, want it to work correctly.

Ken, there were a few different lengths on the lighter element If you still have the old one see if its the same overall length. I know in early 63's there where two different lengths, The early ones say Casco 12v, and later say Casco 63 on the elements.

If you use the wrong one the lighter will not stay engaged.

      Kenneth,

As Edward mentioned, make sure you have a Casco element. There were also elements made by Rochester, I think, and if these elements are used in a socket designed for Casco, the results are exactly as you describe. Casco elements are not difficult to find.

Ken - What lighter was in the car & did it work at all? As mentioned, 63 Corvettes only used Casco lighters. From the discussion it sounds like early 63s could have used the carry-over lighter from 62 which would have been stamped "CASCO 12V" on the side of the lighter element housing & is ~1" long while later Corvette would have used the lighter element that was stamped "63 CASCO 12V." on the side of the housing & is ~7/8" long.
