    Too lazy to pull the trans 1967

    Is it possible to put new trans tunnel insulation in by spliting the insulation from the back to the shifting hole and putting it in from the front??? Any hints???

    I did it, and used the typical ugly yellow 3M adhesive used on the weatherstripping (which looked like what was there originally) near the clips on the sides to help hold it and at the join between the two sides. I spilt it along the left side, where a straight line exists in the hole cut in it from the shifter cutout and pulled it through the shifter area with pliers (gently) from the back end on the left side which is the tightest. Ashamed to admit it, but it isn't judged anyway, right?

      Keith;
      One can also remove the transmission mount and shifter to gain more access. Covering the retaining clips with styrofoam blocks and/or 100 MPH tape also helps.

        I just happen to do my '64 4-speed car yesterday. I removed the rear transmission mount and lowered the transmission to the cross member. That gave me enough room to work the insulation over the trans. I decided not to pull the shifter, so I split and cut out a small 1 inch wide slot in the insulation from the shifter hole to the back of the insulation. I could then slip this around the shifter. After securing the insulation to the tunnel, I put the piece I had cut out back in place and put a piece of dynamat over that section I had cut out. This only took me about 30 minutes to finish. Not to bad of a job. I did have a jack to support and lower the trans, and I was on a lift. You have to determine if you want to use a short cut or remove the shifter to avoid cutting the insulation.

          Keith,
          The suggestion by #4 is a good one, and the tunnel insulation is judged under "under body and fiberglass".

            I never saw a judge crawl under it far enough to see if it was split or not. Are you sure they examine it that fully, all the way up over the tranny? If so what mirrors do they use, haven't seen that either.

              Its only a small split and I bet if you used some of that aluminum tape for heating duckwork that would never detect it even with mirrors. It would take putting it on a lift, Even then, how many points could you loose, 1 for condition?

                True they will just look far enough to see it is there. Split would never be seen.......

                    I think that fact guides much of what I have done on the undercarriage restoration of my '67......
