The tach in my '72 has the jitters when I first fire the car up. However, after little it holds steady. (The engine runs smooth) Does this sound like the cable needs to be lubricated? If so, can I lubricate the cable without taking it out of the car? Any suggestions as to how I might get this done?

Re: 1972 Tach cable
Jerome the tach cable is removed from the housing after you disconnect the cable from the tach. With factory air conditioning ducting to remove I will let someone else post how they did it. One thing you can service before removing the tack cable is to remove the tack gear from the distributor and lubricate it. If this gear fails it will destroy the distributor shaft gearing as well as the tack gear. It is relative easy to remove and lubricate.
Unscrew the tack cable, then remove the coupling the tack cable connects to. A thick metal putty knife will fit the coupling slot to start the turn out of this piece. The tack gear shaft fits in this piece and could come out of the distributor when it is unscrewed from the distributor. Don't lose the hardened washer. Clean the gear shaft and gear teeth and lubricate with good grease and install. www.tispecialty.com has a excellent information for mechanical tacks.
If this lubrication of the tack gear had been in Corvette owners manual as a routine maintenance item, a lot of distributor shafts and tack gears would not of been replaced. It would be great if this would cure your tack issue.- Top

Re: 1972 Tach cable
Jerome,
In addition to what Jim stated, check the distributor housing to see if the small tach driven gear has wore into the back of the distributor housing. This wear will cause misalignment and strip the gear teeth, lots of info in the archives about this subject and it's good maintenance for the distributor.- Top
