Ncrs member a couple of years. Just getting into the rebuild phase of my body off restoration. I use other forums so I do search before asking. I have a may 65 car. What deductions could I expect for putting on most accurate black wall tires with no supporting documentation?

Re: First question
First, do you have the 1965 judging manual? That is where you will find what OEM-brand tires came on your car originally. For current OEM-brand tires that are bias-ply tires (you can buy from several different folks like Coker Tire; Diamond Back) you would lose THREE points for the set of tires on the ground. That is the standard deduction. There are a myriad of other deductions depending on tire design (i.e. radial)Rick Aleshire

Re: First question
Hi Steve . My 65 also came with blackwalls . The closest tires I found were Goodyear power cushions from Kelsey tire . They are the only people that make a 2 ply Nylon tire . All others are polyester. They also make them the correct size to fit in your spare tire holder . The down side is they cost more than the others . there no. is 800 325 0091 .- Top

Re: First question
In addition to the 1965 Judging Guide you need this book:
National Corvette Restorers Society! Judging Reference Manual - NEW Ninth Edition! The NCRS Judging System is quite complex- don't go in without a guide! This manual outlines all rules, procedures, and policies pertaining to NCRS judging events held world-wide, conducting an NCRS Judging School, Duntov Mark of Excellence Awards, McLellan Mark of Excellence Awards, Flight Awards, Performance Verification Testing,
The Juding Reference Manual addresses the standard deductions for many items on the car, and also notes that you won't need any supporting documentation for what color the tires were on day 1. The spare and the road tires don't even have to match.

Re: First question
Thanks all...I do have both the Judging manual and judging guide for 1965. I must have overlooked the deduction stuff in the JRM. Between the JRM, JG, AIM and service manual it is a lot to digest and explore. Thank goodness for resources like this, I couldn't imagine trying to do this 20 years ago....
Mainly my question was if I could get the most accurate bias ply tires available in the market today, since the p91 option availability for 1965 is unclear but generally only regarded valid in early 1965 (January)....without the supporting documentation (which the JG indicates would be required for blackwalls post jan 65)...I wondered what deductions I would get if I had BW's on it anyway (without documentation)? I guess I'll go read the JRM....I like the look of BW's on a silver coupe with hubcaps (which is what mine is), don't really want to swap tires just for judging unless I am really going to lose points...

Re: First question
Many people (myself included) have 4 "repro" tires of some brand ON the car, and an original spare of another brand in the well.

Re: First question
The principal is that we (the judges) want to see an original spare -- if the car has it. We (NCRS) didn't want to force the owner to replace all five tires at the expense of our gratification in seeing that original spare.
I could offer you several examples of situations in which the viewing of the original spare tire and its markings caused quite a stir, but I have more to do today than spout off here. See y'all in Tahoe.Terry- Top
