    Frame vin numbers

Let me start by saying this car is a 1963 which i have owned since 1969. What i am trying to do is match my car's vin # to the frame. I know about the one on the top of the frame by the left rear wheel but their is nothing there. Were all frames stamped back in the 60's? My question now is their another place to look without taking the body off of the frame?

    Thanks in advance

    Re: Frame vin numbers

Ron, here are some photos of the location of frame VIN Numbers on a 1963 frame restoration that was on display at the New England Regional.

From the comments I heard, the lower rail VIN which would be somewhere under the area where the driver door closes. To be seen, the body has to be lifted.

How much, I do not know. Only passing along these photos for your assistance.

I have about 15 photos that I took of this 1963 frame and would be happy to send them along. E-mail me at fulassoc@comcas.net.

      Re: Frame vin numbers

Depending on the condition of the frame the numbers can be very hard to impossible to read. I have heard you can read the number over the left rear wheel with the body on the car. You would have to take a small wire brush and clean the area and may need a mirror to help see the numbers. The numbers at the drivers door location could only be seen with the body raised. I did see an original 63 frame with the body off and the corrision made it impossible to read or even locate any numbers.

In the photos supplied by Pat the VIN# was located directly above the left rear tire vertical centerline. Look closely and you'll see the tire as well as a trailing arm and a solid brake line.

Stephen, you are correct. The second photo is of the VIN stamping on the lower rail under the left rear door jam area. Again, you would have to lift the body to see this VIN stamping.

Since I don't see any numbers on the frame at the left rear wheel area, is it a big job to raise the body high enough off the frame to see the numbers at the drivers door location?

Unless you are the Illinois Secretary of State Police. I saw a theft recovery C3 that they cut a hole in the body under the sill plate so they could see the frame VIN. The good news is I have only seen one like that in all my years of looking at Corvettes, but I don't have any illusions that that car is 1 of 1 or that Illinois is the only state that would do that.

I don't know if you can see the (68) Numbers but I took the left rear wheel of and shinned a light behind the frame and could make out the VIN. IMG_9211.jpg
