    67 Turn signal switch

    I pulled the steering wheel because the turn signal stalk was "droopy". The left brake lights wouldn't function unless I raised the stalk slightly, centering it in the switch. Someone has definitely been in there before, because the black disc was in backwards, and kept the horn contact from protruding through the hole in the black disc and making contact. The horn, not surprisingly, didn't work.
    The issue I have is this: the two dark pieces of spring steel and the white u-shaped piece of plastic were lying in the bottom of the turn signal cup. The spring steel pieces are about 1 3/8" long, and about .185" wide. The plastic white u-shaped piece looks like it could be home made, and is about 5/8" wide and about .760 long.
    My question is: where do these three pieces go, and should the spring steel pieces be preventing the droopy stalk, or is there possibly an additional problem deeper in the switch? I find nothing broken/missing in the switch itself.
    This is a telescopic column, but for 67-68 I don't believe that makes any difference, if I can believe my 1970 parts book.
    I thought I had every applicable manual in the world, but have nothing that covers this question. Thanks for any help you can give!

    Mike,
    The two spring steel pieces 1 3/8" long, and about .185" wide. One is used in the turn signal switch to cancel and center the switch thus the arm too. The second one is a "left over" from someone else that was in there. The switch will not work correctly without the spring steel piece. The white plastic thing I've never seen before.

    The screw securing the signal lever and switch needs removal to install spring under the switch top cover. The post under the screw is peened over. This needs to be lifted. You can see if there is a spring in there witout switch removal on the bearing side.

    Make sure the threads used to secure the switch and turn signal arm have #8-32 threads deep enough into the post to secure everything and not bottomed out prior to that. I assume that is your basic problem.

    Clean all the contacts of the grease that is there and polish contacts then use dielectric grease to avoid tarnish that causes high resistance and failure.

      Gene,
      thanks. I didn't get any responses till yours, so I tackled it alone. I managed to put both springs back in, with a slight reverse bend to add more tension, and I didn't need to uncrimp the peened-over post or remove the cam. All is good!

        Hello Mike;
        The directional arm should slide through a small rectangular black plastic shield between the housing and the switch. Can't see same in your pictures. It is the same material as the round plastic shield pictured. Maybe the white piece pictured was someones attempt to replace same.

          Mike,
          The assembly only requires ONE spring. I don't know what two will do over the long haul! I hope nothing breaks on you. All this is fresh in my head as I just replaced one yesterday. Funny, when I saw your post.
