C4 Battery Insulator and Date Code

Is the Eckler's repo below similar to original late C4 battery insulators, including an actual lid over it? Curious because if so I'm 100% sure my 96 did not come with one from the factory.

Also, the JG says the battery date code is year, month, date (I assume this is a typo meant to be day). One in Pat F.'s recent thread shows "5KK", which I suppose would be 1995, November, 11th. But since the alphabet has only 26 characters, how would days 27-31 be indicated?

Pat, your question about the 5KK is still unanswered and we are working on it.

I am attaching some photos of the battery insulator that was on my 1995.

Re: C4 Battery Insulator and Date Code

Interesting pics of the insulator. I'm still unsure if mine came with one or not. I don't recall seeing one on my OEM battery for years while it was still in the car. But my dealer eventually changed it for me and I guess they could've discarded it. I did keep the battery for a while and it definately did not have one when I stored it. Before I foolishly threw it out, I peeled off the label and would've kept anything else so easily removable.

Please keep me posted about the date codes.

If you have some, could you post pics of the sides of a 96 (or late C4) 671 75B?

      Thanks for your response.

Pat, I have the same one at home in my "parts dept". That's the correct style, no lid. I can put up a picture later.

Sure George, the more pics the better. Got any of the sides of a late C4 671 75B battery? Thanks

Pat my original owner 1996 LT4 came with the battery insulator. I removed it from the original battery and installed it on the replacement. It does not have a insulated top.

Pat M., I got the photo of the battery from a member on this forum, who got it from a friend. I will reach out to that individual to see if we can get some more photos.

I already have a request in to him for a photo of the air filter and the surge tank.

Thanks Pat. I found a non-Corvette insulator from that time period that's nearly identical to the one you've pictured. It's got a couple very minor differences that could be addressed, but they're so minor it may not even need it. It's GM part number 10246636.

Pat my LT4's battery insulator looks like Pat's photos. The two holes cut out of course provide for the negative and positive cable attachment. The other cut allows the for the battery retainer to be placed on the battery.

On my LT4's current AC Delco Professional battery, the only way I have discovered to get the cap off closest to the engine is to take the battery out. To much stuff in the way to lift up the cap and check the water level. With the battery out it is easier to check the water level and add distilled water.

Re: C4 Battery Insulator and Date Code

From the 1999 GM bulletin system. Might explain why some are missing............

It has been found that the battery thermal insulator (1), installed on many new General Motors vehicles, is not always being placed back on the vehicle's battery (2) when the battery is removed or replaced. The installation of the insulator is essential for battery life.

When a battery insulator is specified for use on a particular vehicle, the underhood temperatures for that vehicle are high enough to be critical to battery life. Omitting the thermal insulator when installing the battery will considerably reduce the life of the battery by exposing it to higher underhood temperatures. Inspect the insulator for any damage. If the insulator is damaged or missing, replace as required.
Refer to GMSPO Parts Group #02.333 for the correct insulator.

                              Pat------

As far as I know, the battery insulator was first used for the 1992 model year. There were 3 insulators used over the 1992-96 period. These were as follows:

                              1992-93-----------------GM #10143567

                              1994-96-----------------GM #10226870

                              POSSIBLY late 1996------GM #22649884

The 10143567 and 10226870 were very similar. I do not know how the 22649884 might or might not have differed. In March, 1998 GM #22611064 replaced the 22649884 for SERVICE. Later the GM #22611064 was replaced by GM #15180205 which remains available. The latter is the type with the "lid" which, as far as I know, none of the original insulators were equipped with. I believe the Eckler's "repro" is actually the GM #15180205. While none of the original insulators were equipped with a lid, I have no doubt that the type with the lid are functionally superior.

Attached are photos of an NOS GM #10226870.
