    Re: L84 Air Filter Element

Hi Guys, FWIW, I've had a Paragon foam element in my 64 FI for 10 years now, still feels good, no deterioration etc. I clean it in soapy water, Dawn dish washing liquid, dry it out. I have two so I install the 'clean' dry one after I work in some motor oil or spray it with K&N filter oil. 22K miles and still running fine.

PS went through 60 miles of a dust storm on way to Las Vegas, FI unit stayed clean inside so no complaints.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

The 6418 works just fine. Unslightly orange but not seen. Has a hard tennis ball at one end. The element is cone shape and looks like a little rocket ship.
Use it as is. Cost is about 20 buks. 6418 or the NAPA part number above.
By the way your FI will breath better Dan Holstein if you pitch the foam element with oil. Only sounds logical if we think about it.
I don't care for the purple element either.
You see guys asking high bucks for the 63 to 65 air cleaner filter screen. Actually the part has little value as you don't need it anymore.
Too bad someone doesn't make a nice paper element for the 58 to 62 FI's. JD

John, you're just affraid that a drop of oil may appear on the bottom of your germ free air cleaner, they should check this at PV! My 64 breaths just fine, bring your pink slip ole buddy!!!

The kind of damage that poor air filtration causes is not the acute sort of damage. It's the kind of damage that insidiously reduces an engine's life. Of course, with the kind of miles most of these old cars see these days, it's an effect that may never materialize for all practical purposes.

I can tell you this, though: I'd NEVER want to drive through a dust storm with one of these old air filters. Never. Ever.

              Re: L84 Air Filter Element

Thanks for the kind thoughts guys! I did talk to Paragon about the 'repro' air cleaner foam material but they didn't have any specs on the material. I've tried the paper ones but the fit wasn't the best for sealing. The dust storm was not by choice, but did provide a real op test of the foam air cleaner. After beating it against the wall at the Las Vegas regoinal, I passed my PV test. Later, when home had to clean up the mud in the engine compartment from the thunder showers at Stateline before getting to Vegas. What a fun trip! The inside of the FI air meter etc. was clean still but external needed a scrubbing. The air cleaner element has been in the car for 20K miles, isn't deteriorating like the originals do, 10 years and counting. Oil looks clean after 2K miles, so my dirt hone must have seated the rings fine. Have a friend here that put 140K on his 64 FI before first over haul, on the original drive cable also. I do wish they made a properly shaped paper element, the ones I've seen are packed up against the sides of the canister, which can't be good for max air flow.
