C2 center console

Is the center console (where the radio, clock , etc are located) restored by replacing the entire structure or just recovering it ?
i just received an order from AlKnock and it was just the vinyl covering. I was expecting the entire unit much the like dash pads. (I probably didn't read the fine print) Did I order the wrong part? I don't recall any options other than I ordered.

If you are speaking about the dash panel, and I assume you are , it consists of the fiberglass panel, 1 speaker grille and two eyebrow pads. Restoration of it would include redoing all of these .

If you are just speaking of the "eyebrows" , they consist of a fiberglass frame , foam padding and vinyl covering over the foam padding.

I do believe there are two options for restoration here. One is ordering both complete eyebrows in the color of your choice and replacing the old ones . The other option is just ordering the vinyl covering , then removing the old vinyl and recovering with the new . While the first option is a lot more expensive , the second option requires a lot of skill and patience . Not to mention the fact that the old foam covering is brittle ,40 plus years old, and likely to stick to the old vinyl in places , when trying to remove it .

jim, yes I understand the dash pads and have new ones in stock. It is the console/area between them I am questioning . Thanks

I believe there is a 'terminology' challenge here. It sounds like your speaking of the actual fiberglass dash.....the metal console is lower down and surrounds the dash at the bottom. Your speaking of the fiberglass dash or the console?

I don't why everyone is confused about this. You're talking about the fiberglass part of the dash that holds the radio, heater controls, etc., right? You need to remove the vinyl and recover it.

Thanks Paul, yes I will do that. Do you or anyone else know if this is done by removing the fiberglass structure before recovering ? I would hope so , even with the dash pads out , it would seem a tuff job.

"Terminology" I took from the catalogs which can be misleading, that is why I specified in the original post " where the clock and radio are located" . Looks like the judging guide calls it the "center vertical area"

Jim,

Sorry about that . Like Mike says , the terminology, AND the fact that I forgot about some 63s having the dash panel covered in vinyl as well , threw me off a bit . I was thinking there were only the painted fiberglass ones .

So now to answer your question as I finally understand it . I have no idea as to whether Al offers a complete dash unit recovered in new vinyl or not . But with your old dash panel ,and the new skin you have , I would think a good upholstery shop would serve you just fine , and you would probably be way better off financially .

I have given the vinyl cover a good look and I think I can do the remove/recover myself with a heat gun and some 3M adhesive. Doesn't seem beyond my skill level providing I can get the panel out and back in.
Anyone out there done this themselves ?

Jim,

I have only gotten as far as removing mine . Drilled out the side rivets and cracked the "glued in " portion in the very bottom of the back , just underneath the radio cut out . I hope it goes in as easily as it came out !
