    natural cast iron look

I know this topic as been discussed many times in the past, and how to achieve it. my question is the project I am working on was taken apart and some of the parts were started to refinish. I simply can't ask the people who done it as the shop is no longer around and the owner wont talk. they redone a few brackets to a natural look. I am trying to figure out what they did to them so I can reproduce the look on other parts. here are some of the parts in a close up picture. any ideas are welcome

    Keith,
    grey phosphate?
    does not look like paint.
maybe a rust preventive dry film or oxide.
from photos shown does not look like bare casting being too dark but that could just be photo issues.
