    1963 vett stall problem

    HELP!
I just had my original carb rebuilt (carter AFB 3461S / CF3), the car didn't run right? in first gear, if I just gave it normal gas it would stall, so I had to feather the clutch and give it a lot of gas to get it rolling, going into second the motor would buck and struggle, it never felt right or did it run strong (the car was a complete restoration, motor rebuilt, etc, less than 500 miles on motor). So I went to an ace mechanic to have him check out the carb, he rebuilt, found that there was 1 spring for the acc. pump missing, problems with the floats. Took the car out for a test run and it ran strong, on my way home, about 2 miles, the car stopped running? (I think I hear a pop or back fire just before), took car back to mechanic) he felt it was an electrical problem because the motor was getting gas, he found a resistor or ? that limits/controls spark to the points needed replacement, he took it for a test drive, it ran fine and then stalled just as before? , so now the carb is off and he is doing a complete review again.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

I did have a similar problem with my 63. It was hard to start in first gear without giving a lot of gas. My problem was caused by the distributor and rebuilding the distributor to the specifications of my engine correct the difficulty.

      Kenneth,

You need to determine if the problem is electrical or fuel related. When the car stalls get a test light and check for power at the coil +. From your description it sounds electrical to me.

        Kennith,

I would also be suspect of a reproduction coil if the car has one installed.

FWIW; Do you know who rebuilt the carb the first time? Reason I ask is that I bought a rebuilt 3461S also and found the override spring missing from the accelerator pump, one incorrect primary venturi cluster, a damaged and useless hot idle valve and aftermarket floats (wrong weight and pivot point - useless as well). It is a wonder that it ran for the previous owner as well. Also, the primary butterflys did not seat correctly in the throttle bores allowing the idle transfer slot to be exposed too much in one bore and less in the other. The throttle shaft was too sloppy in the shaft bores in the body as well requiring them to be sleeved. It was a basket case, and I still don't have it completely sorted out (waiting for cooler weather). Meantime, I have the sweetest running L-76 with a 3721SB on it.

If you know the name of the vendor, I'd appreciate you send that information to me in a private message or E-Mail.

It sounds heat related to me and probably electrical. How did you get the car back to the mechanic, towed or did it start running again after a while?

Hey Ken I had the same carb and the same exact problem. I had several people look at it over the 9 years I had the car. When I sold it last year. The problem still existed. Had a 327/340 total frame off rebuild. I was told to use, NAPA heavy duty [points. Good luck
