Check to see if the o-ring/gasket from the first oil filter is stuck to the engine. Two o-rings leak like sieves (so I've heard).

It wasn't leaking before I removed it. The old gasket was there and I removed it. I placed the new gasket on top of the filter housing and pushed it up against the engine as hard as I could and tightened the bolt. Where did I go wrong? A 20 minute job is now an all day job and still not done.

This is going to sound stupid, but are you sure the PRV is in place? As you know, it provides the groove for the O-Ring to seat. Sorry, but couldn't think of any other reason.

That is not true. Many cars (mine included) had two gaskets at one time and did not leak. However, there are also many stories from those that had problems. The best bet is to install one NEW gasket at each oil change and remove the old gasket.

Make sure that the gasket is the correct square cut rubber gasket. A national vendor was supplying an incorrect round o-ring gasket with their oil filters. This is incorrect. Next remove any old gasket(s) and install the new one into the oil filter boss in the engine........not placed atop the filter can. Make certain the oil gasket sealing surface in the block is clean and not scored. Then install the new gasket with a bit of grease to keep it in place while you bolt up the oil can.

You may have either used the wrong gasket or pinched/rolled the gasket by not seating it correctly in the block cavity.

Removed oil and filter and (now damaged) gasket and then this time I seated the (new) gasket into the engine groove first, THEN placed the filter housing in place and tightened it. This worked. Halleluiah!! THANKS, LARRY!!

Well, I've had the two gasket problem twice in 30 years, both times left several quarts of oil on the ground in about 10 seconds.

When installing new filter and g asket put light coat of oil on mating surfaces of gasket, or bit of grease as suggested.Do not overtighten filter. Hand tighten will work.

Stu's got a good point, double check that the pressure relief valve is in place and centered.

Many times if the old gasket is difficult to remove try loosening the valve assembly then change the square gasket and snug the valve back in place. Don't break the 1/4" bolts, just snug.

A dental pic is great for removing the old gasket. I have always used a little grease to hold the new one in place.

STEVE we are talking steel canister with a cartridge & long bolt with a washer that needs to be tightened with a wrench. Don't think he meant a spin on one.

I have a small drip at the bolt that goes into the canister. Can the washers be replaced? Where do you get a rebuild kit and is it easy to install?
