I have a very bad clutch chatter on my 68 BB. it only chatters when starting from a dead stop. if I get the RPM up high and let the clutch out rather quickly it is almost gone. never chatters once moving. The clutch doesn't slip at all. any ideas?

Re: 68 clutch chatter
Dale, the flywheel or pressure plate, or both has some hot spots on it and this is what generally causes clutch chatter. If you can modify your take off as you have done is about the only thing you can do, other than just doing a clutch job.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: 68 clutch chatter
Dale, It's probaby oil or oxidation on on the pressure plate, more driving can make this condition go away in these cases. I have had this issue when the car sits in storage for a while. Check to make sure the bolts on the motor mounts are tight enough. A bent shaft could also cause this problem (but a bad shaft is rather rare). I think weak springs
can also cause this. good luck, Tony....- Top
