    Recoat 63 frame?

Hi all, around 13 years ago frame was dipped , primed with DP-90, then painted with Quanta Q-Coat Chassis black. After sitting all these years, covered with sheets of and on, collected alot of dust. Wiped entire frame down with water and soft cloth and is now very dull. Thinking about re-painting it with the Quanta Q-Coat Chassis black and asking for input on how to prep the frame before putting another coat of paint on it, or any other ideas that may restore the luster of the current paint. Thanks for any help or input, James

Call Quanta and ask what type of paint they sell and go by the directions on the can .

Hi Bill. thanks for the reply...Did just that last week, some what helpful but not enough to proceed to re-coat or any other idea's on what to better clean it with. Also I assume you have never gotten any paint from them or would have know at least years ago when I bought it there are no directions at all on the paint can for Chassis Black. My son posted and asked the question here for input not because other avenues were not looked into before he posted...we are both learning and have a lot to learn. Trying not to waste anyones time here and I expect him to find answere's on his own if I cannot help him, so therefore he is on here asking those that have the experience and knowledge that just might help him.

      Thanks

        James,
From the picture, I think your frame looks good just as it is. Is there any rust showing through? Remember, it is a frame, and it is not supposed to be glossy. Once you start driving it, it will get dirty. Unless it is going to be a trailer queen with about 5 miles per yr.

There is no rust, a couple small chips that can be touched up. Picture shows the area where the sheets covered the frame and where it was not covered (lighter vs darker areas, can see on side rails). Wanting to somehow make it all one shade once more...Thanks James

Now that you pointed it out, I can see the difference in colors on the front rail near where the bumper attaches.

I used DP90 as well on my frame with a GM chassis frame black paint as a top coat. I don't know if the Quanta paint is the same, but the GM paint is mostly volitiles in it. Damn near sparying with water. So I wonder if you will cover that difference in color.

I also built my own car carrier trailer and used D90 without a top coat. I kept the trailer outdoors and it turned that milky color that you see.

You need the advice of paint experts so that you can avoid painting the affected areas only to have it peel after a while.

I'm not a paint expert, but putting more DP90 on top is probably not going to work. DP90 needs to be put on within 7 days of the last coat as explained in the PPG information.

James, I'd just scuff it and shoot it with your choice of chassis black. HOWEVER, test a couple of sections to make sure that the paint is compatible and there's no wrinkling, shrinking, lift, etc. It also appears from your pictures that parts of the frame need a little additional work.

It's hard to tell in the pictures, but it looks rough under the brackets in the front. More like dirt that just thin paint, so you might want to check under all of the brackets. These brackets are stamped and then welded to the frame, so they should be smooth except for a little weld spatter.

Yes it is mostly just dust with a little bit of an overspray that I think I can clean up, do you see anything else? James

                      James,

Here is a shot from one of John Hinckley's PowerPoints that shows a drum brake chassis going down the St. Louis line. To me your frame looks about right. Keep in mind the frames were stored outside prior to assembly so some weathering would be normal, as you can see in the photo.

My 67 frame was in the same condition. I had painted it with GM Restoration Paint many years ago. It had dulled quite a bit. I used autobody Scotchbrite on the entire frame with a prepsol wipe down, took about 3 hours. Instead of the Quanta, I shot it with Summit Chassis Black Semi-Gloss for 2 reasons, the this paint is a 2 part uarthane where the Quanta is an enamel and the Chassis Black is a very high solids paint (takes a lot of stirring to get it gun ready). I'm very satisfied with the results.
