weld the hole closed. It serves no useful purpose. The hole does allow water to leak inside the
Corvette. I replaced both lower panels on my 70. The actual replacement parts from GM I was able
to purchase in 1986 had this hole. The hole was welded closed on both replacements.- Top

IIRC that hole is there so that a spot welding electrode can gain access to the inside of that piece to place spotwelds on the other side of the assembly. It does serve a very useful function in building the birdcage. Once the BC is built -- not so much.Terry- Top

Terry when I received my GM replacements the top piece and the lower piece were together. I still have both sides from GM since I only used a portion of the top pieces to weld in as replacement formed sheet metal to repair rust damage. Knowing the hole was there and only protected by the fiberglass support for the upper rear fender it would of been great if they would of closed the hole.
Did your 1970 LT-1 ever leak in the rain, dripping water from the bottom of the dash pad on the floor mat when you used to drive it?- Top

You were extremely fortunate to be able to purchase these corner pieces from a GM dealer in 1986. The l1968-72 left and right side lower corners were discontinued without supercession in 1978 and 1979, respectively. Some dealer must have had them in stock. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1972 Birdcage Repair Lower Windshield Corner
I can't remember the leak from the bottom of the dash pad, but the is/was one from the upper outboard corner of the windshield frame. Maybe from the hardtop seal, I don't know where it started, but it dripped on me in a most embarrassing place. Kind of killed the chick magnet idea pretty quickly.Terry when I received my GM replacements the top piece and the lower piece were together. Joe I also purchased the top windshield frame and the attaching two top corners at the same time. I am glad I was fortunate to purchase the lower corner pieces since they had been discontinued so long.- Top
