    what is this?????

I pulled out the passenger side carpet today. Cool thing... found a tag. Uncool thing. .there seems to be some sort of heat shielding that I cant identify. The silver heat shield under the carpet is doubled up. Then there is another layer of heat resistant material on top of a riveted in metal plate. With high temp sealant.
    See photos.
Is this stock? I cant find any information on this. It also looks like the floor in the foot area has been over heated. No silver insulation down there, only under the passenger seat.

    Ross,
Look under the patch and see if the exhaust burnt the follr board, especially if the shield is missing.

It's not original; it's some sort of repair and modification. What year model and engine is this car? That's important information that you didn't provide in your post.

The floor is actually cut out in that area.
the heat shield above the cat is still there and seems unharmed. It is a 75 convert

I agree, it cant be stock.. but the carpet is original. And the silver insulation is original, and the added insulation pad looks like factory.

Surprisingly, it is stock! I believe you will find the part you pictured on UPC A01 to A12, sheet 5.5. It's GM #362937. In fact, it was once available in SERVICE but was discontinued in November, 1985.

Could it have been a quick fix for the first year a catalytic converter was used? I'm pretty sure in 1976 they went with all steel floor pans on both sides as an "improvement" to keep heat from catalytic converter entering the cockpit.

                    Mike,
I think you're right. My car has a July 8th build date. And the floors are fiberglass. I guess it was a factory fix

It's found in the 1975 Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM).

                            Tory,
The 75 model is proving to be a real transition period. I believe earlier versions had fiberglass floors, later versions had steel floors. I particularly appreciate the mass of rivets and the ample application of red RTV.

1975 was the first year for the catalytic converter and GM was in a "learning mode" with respect to items associated with it.
