56 oil pan gasket info needed

I need to replace the oil pan gasket on my 265. Is there a one piece gasket available? What do you recommend?

    Thanks,

If your 265 is a '56 or later block with oil filter boss and if your oil pan takes a thin front seal, then go to your FLAPS and ask for a Fel-Pro 1885.

I just put one of these on my '60. Fit was perfect and it doesn't leak a drop.

Caveat: The rubber is blue and can easily be seen. If that's an issue, you might want to also buy a rattle can of engine paint.

      Jim is correct.
ALLLLLLLLLLLL 56-later Small Blocks--------------WITH A LEFT SIDE DIPSTICK--------------- will use the same style pan gasket.
BUT, be aware, in 74 the FRONT gasket (rubber seal) changed to the thick version (the front of the PAN changed, not the timing cover lip) and service replacement pans also changed. So make sure which pan you have. If your engine has its ORIGINAL 56 pan, then you need the gasket with the thin front seal.
MOST (4-piece) gasket sets come with the below instructions included so that you can measure and determine if your pan requires the thick or thin front gasket (seal).

            Jim,

I have ordered the fel-pro gasket. They indicated that it was a one piece gasket, is that right?

            Thanks,

            Dave

Yes, it is a one piece gasket.

              Three hints/suggestions:

              1. If you are installing this with the engine in the car, make some clips (about 6) to support the gasket while you bring the oil pan up to the block. I used six strips of thin, aluminum flashing and made "U" shaped openings at one end so they could be removed once the pan bolts were started.

              2. There are two small tabs at the rear of the gasket which fit into recesses on either side of the rear main cap. Be sure these tabs are correctly located or either you won't be able to cinch the pan down at the rear or it will leak badly.

              3. Expect the front of the seal to be a tight fit between the timing cover and the oil pan. This is a Real Good Thing. However, it means you should expect the front pan bolts to be slightly difficult to tighten.

              Good luck,

              Jim

                Jim -

The Fel-Pro one-piece pan gaskets I've used came with threaded plastic "hold-ups" that did the same thing - saved making them.

I recently replaced the oil pump on my '67 and used one of these. I got the complete kit with the hold ups and fasteners. You will have a blue gasket (which, as above can be painted), but you will also have incorrect head mark fasteners. I would think that as these become more popular, one of the outfits supplying repop fasteners will begin to offer over-extra length bolt kits. I take a quick look every once and a while on the web, but so far, nothing. The installation went slick, and so far (two months) no leaks,

If you have already bought/used a one piece pan gasket with the hardware, then SAVE the corner hardware and after that, only buy the gasket (1885-1886) that you need. You can buy or use whatever bolts/washers you prefer to secure the pan. For attaching parts such as pans, I use stainless fasteners. I could care less about markings/logos on fasteners and bolts. For those kinds of things, I am only interested in serviceability and not originality.

Looks like that's a different part number, John. For certain the 1885 (which I bought about 5 weeks ago) didn't come with the "hold-ups". It wasn't a big deal to me since I made those clips 13 years ago when I was building my Grand Sport. I just hung on to them and they come in handy from time to time.

                          Now this is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just called my local neighborhood friendly O'Reilly store------------------------the gasket WITH hardware is cheaper than the gasket WITHOUT hardware. My parts guy checked it 3 times. Same thing each time. Is that weird????

Mike's post (#9 above) describes the situation exactly as it is. The gasket pictured by John is the 34509T which includes the hardware. The 1885 does not, although it's the same gasket. I've always used the 34509T although I have always known I could usually use the 1885 just as well (i.e. don't need the hardware).
