6 Volt generator capacitor part number

The radio noise canceling .3 MF capacitor that mounts on the outside of the generator is very well documented for the 12V cars. But I don't see the Delco Remy part number for the 6V cars listed in the parts book or other sources handy to me.

Studying the photos I've taken of unrestored cars I see the part in question on a late 54 with 3081 miles on it is a 1917580 .5MF capacitor. Is this the capacitor others have found on unrestored cars? If not what other part numbers have been seen?

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Troy, Capacitors have a max voltage rating and can be used on lower voltage applications. So if one works for 12v it'll work for 6v since it's a lower voltage requirement.

I'll check my 1929-1959 P&A tattered hardcopy which includes Corvette when I get out to the shop later this morning. In the meantime I just looked on GMPartsWiki and it shows Olds from '48 to '62. So I think they were 6v at least in '48?

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Thanks, Rich. Olds would have been 6V until 1953 when the changed a few of their models over to 12V. The rest changed in 54.

I see the Olds parts book is showing the same 1917580 .5 MF part number I was thinking of.

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Troy, no luck in the 29-59 P&A. I cannot find ANY radio suppression condenser anywhere. I looked in every section I could think of.

I started in the Group 9.650 and beyond in the radio section.....nada. Then Generator Group 2.275 and beyond...nada.

I must be missing something. The only condenser in the index is for the distributor(points condenser). Makes no sense they didn't have OTC condensers in this book. It's a monster.

Maybe when Joe Lucia checks in he'll find something.

I have a friend restoring a very original '54 nearby and placed a call but not home. He'll call back and I'll ask him if his generator had one on it. I was with him in GA when he looked at it and bought but I can't recall and no pics.

Thanks for helping out with this.

I had also found the early Corvette parts book only lists the condenser for the distributor points. None for the generator. Thus my seeking help from members.

My unrestored '54, #3300, has a generator capacitor. Don't know the value, though.

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Ok my friend just called. The one on his '54 is........

1911095 .3MF with DR in the center (Delco Remy?)

He said the bracket is spot welded to it very close to the end with the part# on it.

I see just like Jim's photo above. Thanks for the nice pic Jim.

So I just looked on gmpartswiki and all it shows is

                OPEL discontinued 1/75 @ $1.17

                Rich

edit........I just looked at my '59 AIM and it shows the 1911095 as the generator condenser for it. The one on his '54 was likely replaced.
                Sorry.

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Yes, that is the common part number for the 12V Corvettes with radio, 55 all the way to 62 I believe. DR does stand for Delco Remy.

That may be correct for 6V too but I'm trying to find out if it is or is 1917580 the correct one.

Re: 6 Volt generator capacitor part number

Found this 1917950 on ebay. Not definitive data, but the seller says used on 55-66 GM

and this one at Chicago Corvette says 56-62 for the Voltage Regulator....

and a thread on the chevytalk forum says.....
                    http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...php?tid/91596/

                    1929070 .3mf for ignition coil
                    1911095 .3mf for generator
                    1917580 .5mf for voltage regulator. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

which also says it's for the VR, hmmm.

Thanks for the research, Rich. I did discover all that in looking at parts books and the 55 Chevy Accessories Installation and Reference Manual has a great section on setting the car up for radio installation. It covers the capicitors as well as the static collectors that go on the front wheel spindles.

                          Chris,
That's the same capacitor used on 12V generators 55 and up. It is certainly possible that they were also used on 6V. But for some reason I'm skeptical but very open minded.
