Could anyone tell me if, for judging, yellow inspection paint markings on the top of the axle housing ( 2" wide applied by a brush) is correct for a 1957 that I plan to have judged ? Also, yellow inspection paint on the sides of the differential and at the ends of the leaf springs ( where they attach to the shackles) would tis also be correct ? I found this to be indicated in the Quanta chassis detail kit and wanted to verify before going to the trouble. Thanks, Bill

Re: 57 Yellow Inspection Paint
I have asked multiple times about daubs of different colors of paint on various areas of the chassis and suspension and have NEVER had any kind of good responses. NEVER (a person would think this place could provide answers)!!!!
But, regardless of what was or was not painted in the way of various colors anywhere on the chassis/suspension, sometime prior to body drop, the entire assembled chassis/suspension was covered with chassis black. Thus (depending on how thoroughly it was applied), all inspection paint markings would be covered with black. If a person plans to have a car entered into NCRS judging with the appearance it had when delivered new, THEORETICALLY, no inspection paint markings would be visible anyway.- Top

Re: 57 Yellow Inspection Paint
IT'S NOT COVERED!!!
A few years ago, I disassembled and rebuilt a VIRGIN, complete 57 front cross member/suspension and during removal of many years of crud, grease, etc, I uncovered and took pictures of various paint markings on the components. I posted pictures here------------------ZERO answers. I have also posted pictures and inquired about paint markings on various rearends-----------------------ZERO answers.Apparently, there is little to no conclusive knowledge about ANY of the inspection paint markings which were clearly just daubed on with a hand held paint
brush.
EXAMPLES
ON SOME CUSTOMERS' REARENDS, AFTER CLEANING, I have attempted to duplicate the paint markings with the same best sloppy techinque as was done at the factory. BUT I STILL DON'T KNOW THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ANY OF THE PAINT MARKINGS!
EXAMPLES
Also, on SOME rears that I have rebuilt for customers, after cleaning, I have also attempted to duplicate the paint markings on the INSIDE of the differential case which indicate pinion shim thickness (ya, that's dumb since the inside will never be seen, but I've done it any way on a few!).

The chassis, especially for 53-62 cars, was nearly completely coated in chassis black. The frame arrived at the St Louis plant completely coated black. The entire differential and housing including brake backing plates and drums would also have been covered in chassis black before it was installed on the chassis. Same for the entire front suspension/steering, drums and backing plates. Most of the rest of the components were covered during final blackout.
Most of the paint dabs are for part ID. Not inspection.- Top

Re: 57 Yellow Inspection Paint
I'D JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHAT ALL THE DIFFERENT COLORS AND LOCATIONS OF PAINT MARKS MEAN! I've been rebuilding old Chevy frontends/rearends for 45+yrs and would like to know what the markings mean. Over the years (actually, recent years) I've taken a few pictures of colors and their locations. Now I wish I had taken many more.- Top

Re: 57 Yellow Inspection Paint
I vote with Tom and Doc. I think the marks were typically covered in the chassis blackout process. They show up eventually on unrestored cars because the cheesy blackout paint they used wears away IMHO.
BTW, I think the brake drums also got painted black, at least on the back edges, but the paint is often missing after so many years. Anyone else have thoughts on this one?- Top
