    Every Point Counts...Judging 62 vette

I'm reviewing last year Texas Regional Point losses for Fixing...what is your opinion ?.

JG says Door strikers and latches were installed before paint and MAY have overspray on edges...Got 2 point deduct for no overspray ( car was repainted during resto )

JG says trunk floor access plates MAY have been rotated during paint and a shadow the shape of the plate MAY show on the floor....got 2 point deduct for no shadow on floor

Can these point deducts be challenged with sucess at time of judging.....The JG seems ambigious with the word "may"

There are other 1 and 2 point deducts in this catagory...I know this is not a popular topic

Hi Jerry . Its been a long time sense I judged 62s but I have never seen a C1 or C2 without some trace of overspray on the door strikers . On the access plates I dont think I would deduct anything on shadows , thin paint etc . I would be looking at the screws for finish .

John....there seems to be ridge of paint around the striker indicting some sort of mask was applied during paint....not just random overspray....i had a new 62 and didn't notice overspray ( long time ago...i know )

Thanks for your reply and pics

If it's any consolation to you, Jerry, same thing happened to me at the New England Regional. My '62 was marked down for both these items.

Jerry the striker was masked with wide masking tape (2 inch). it was only as good as the worker done it on that day on that car . As far as judging no two judges are the same or look for the same things . Most of us look at things we had problems with . Some judges need to read the book and judge only by what the book says , some have enough knowledge they dont need the book for most things . I always felt if you know something is not typical but is not in the manual to note it and tell the owner but with no deduction .Bill

                Jerry:
To answer this part of your question...YES you can "sucessfull challange" items that are subjective / ambigious while you are on the judging field.
There is an "official process" to follow described in the judging manual to first have a polite discussion with the judging team in question and if you still feel strongly...you can then have a polite discussion with the team leader.
I agree the word "MAY" is ambigious and subjective.
Yes - I have won some of my points back during a polite discussion with the judges since it "may" or "may not" be present.
Each car was not the same...that is why the JG states "MAY".

Bill and Dan...Great respones..wish most judges felt that way.....Just saying that so much work and money goes into these cars to get them back to T.F.P. It ain't easy baby.

Re: Every Point Counts...Judging 62 vette

A common sense reading of the "may" examples cited would indicate the JG was intending to cover those cars where something happened during production resulting in a residual overspray rather than setting a standard that all cars should have overspray present. If point deductions were made for an absence of overspray it would appear that the judges involved did not understand that the JG is attempting to soften the standard to allow for a small mistake from the factory rather than imposing the requirement that all cars must present with the same mistake.

                      Jerry,

Sounds like your judge needs to better understand the CDCIF matrix. There are only 4 originality points for latches and strikers. Of those 4 availible originallity points, less than 1 point would apply to the "finish" axis of the parts in question.

Regardless, I agree with others that the "may" should not be interpreted as "will" and no deduct should have been taken at all.

Appeal to the team lead if you think it is worth the effort. However, you may want to save your ammo for the 10 & 20 point deducts instead.

At both the New England Regional and the Hampton Nationals I got a couple of NO point deductions but advise on things that were not typical. I appreciated the advise and hope it keeps coming.

TRUNK: I think this is what the judges are looking for. Three Regionals and one National, zero deductions.IMG_0744.JPG
