C2 coupe rear window molding clip

Can anyone tell me the purpose of the material that covers the hole on the C2 coupe rear window molding clip shown at left in the attached photo, which is missing from the clip on the right? That material is very brittle and I believe these clips are original NOS GM items, GM # 4871329. Should that material be pliable, rather than brittle?

    Thanks,

    Gary

My thought would be that it serves as a seal over the screw. I think a dab of 3M black strip caulk would serve the same putpose. Either way it won't be visible. Dan

      Dan,

If the material were pliable, I can see it doing something with sealing over the screw. Here's the photo, which didn't make it with my first posting.

Gary, have you pulled any of the front clips? I just restored the fronts on my 67 (I'm not pulling the rear window), they all had a dab of black material. On half of them, the material was still pliable when scraped off, on the others, the material was hard and it cracked when I scraped it off. The dabs that were pliable had a consistency like RTV and seemed different from the black windshield sealant.

          Bill,

I have not pulled the front nor the rear windshield, but I've been trying to collect GM NOS or good used GM clips for both front and rear, since I've read the repro clips don't work adequately, at least not for the front.

            Gary,
I think you are just looking at a blob of sealer that dried. I have done the windshield installation a few times, and fresh pliable sealer is your friend. You need to clean out any traces of old hardened stuff you find if you hope to get a good final fit on the moldings. I wrestled with the reproduction clips and it was not fun. You should have an easier time with good original clips. Cheers!

Gary; what has happened is that the stuff on there that seals the screw hole in the fiberglass has dried up. I had some nos ones that were from 84 and they were just like that and cracked off when tightened down. just use some black goo under it. Oh and on the front you should savor those original clips even if they are questionable. this is critical as you cant do anything with them once the glass is in there. the repros just will not let you put the trim on as they have a ratchet type holding devise that does not work well on the old trim. Also the distance from the roof panel is important as well as this sets the trim height. the assembly manual has the deminsions for the screw hole position. the more time you spend with the clips the easier the glass and trim will be.

And thank you Gary; my glove box and spare tire locks worked perfectly at the regional event in Kenner La. Last month! You work speaks for itself.

Gary, I just restored my front clips but had one that was broken. I got a repo clip from a buddy that does restomods and I checked the metal thickness, it was the same as the original ones. The repo came with round spongy seal on the screw hole. I could easily throw the calipers on the repo & original to check all dimensions if you like.

                        Bill,

Thanks for the offer, but these is no real need to measure. I've heard from enough people that the repro front clips just don't function well, so even if they are the same thickness, that's irrelevant if they don't function properly.
