    54 Radio fuse

Hi. I turned on the 54 radio on a cruise the other day and nothing. Got home and fuse was blown. I checked all connections at radio etc. and put in another fuse and turned it on and it hummed for a few second's then blew the fuse again. What should be checked? Thank you. Brad.

I'd look at the power supply on the back of the speaker. The power supply uses "electrolytic" capacitors which, over time, can develop short circuits across their terminals. There could be other PS problems, of course, but my money is on the capacitors.

Hi. Brad here. I went out this morning and turned off power to car then put in new fuse put back power only fuse is fine, then turned on car (started) fuse is fine, then turned on radio, no noise got under dash and wiggle little plug connector and it started the radio without fuse blowing, ran for five min. or so still ok. Could that plug in too far or not enough blow the fuse? Hmmm. Thank's, Brad.

        Brad,

No such thing as having the connector plugged in too far. Scratch that idea. As for not being plugged in far enough, I can imagine a scenario in which the fuse might blow. However, that scenario includes the assumption that the electrolytic capacitors have degraded.

When you replaced the fuse, did you do so with a fuse of the same rating as the one you removed?

The plug at the bottom of the pack can become easily unplugged
          I have had that happen
Also check at the power block on the firewall - check the plastic holder and spring - I have stretch the spring in order to hold the fuse tight and make good contact.

Jim/Chris 14 amp fuse is what has always been in holder, I will check to see if the spring has enough tension. Also is that speaker with power source on it a radio guy check or can my electrical device guy check and repair this if bad caps etc? Thank you, Brad.

I would recommend you take the radio and power supply to a radio guy. Radio work, in general, requires specialty instruments and specialized knowledge that someone experienced in radio repair will have.
