The 66 427 that I lifted the body off of today well really all this week has side pipes. Would an original side pipe car have the normal rocker mounting tabs? Or any evidence of tailpipe muffler hangers? What other minor differences would an original side pipe car show. I think my car was not originally a side pipe car but was changed over as many probably were with GM parts fairly early. I am going to leave it with the side pipes they are rather cool but want to address any factory correct alterations. I notice in the 66 AIM some line customized items but cant really picture them. If it was spring I could just go to a corvette event and look at a finished car. My car came with I think 68 or 70 wheels and wide tires stuck on it the disk brakes require larger or rather deeper rims than my 60 and 64 correct?

Re: Differences for 66 with factory sidepipes
Jef, If it's an AOS body then it could not have been built with side-pipes. Only St. Louis bodies got side-pipes. Only St. Louis had the machine to cut the notches for the side-pipes.
There should be no residual brackets from a non-side-pipe car. (rockers, exhaust, etc). The hole in the center cross member is only threaded for a non-side-pipe car as that is where the ground strap was attached.
Anyway, if it was born without side-pipes and the person is going to have it judged, he will have a boat load of points deducted.

Re: Differences for 66 with factory sidepipes
Jef,
This is from one of John Hinckley PowerPoints, I believe it is a shot of one of the notches on an original N14 car. You can see it would not be easy to duplicate without the original tooling.

Re: Differences for 66 with factory sidepipes
Do you know if all the ST Louis 1966 Corvettes had this or just the ones that came with factory installed side pipes?- Top

Re: Differences for 66 with factory sidepipes
Jef,
Expect a full deduction for any options/missing parts or color changes made from what the car was manufactured as originally. It is your car and you can do what ever you want to it. But understand NCRS will judge the car to a high standard and deductions will be made to what ever is not per those standards. Added options that were not on said car originally will receive deductions. Added side pipes will get "boat load" of deducts as Harry stated for all the missing original configuration parts.- Top
