    Going to paint the starter on the "63 before re installation. Appreciate some info on a resaonably "correct" black. thanks

    I used thew Krylon 1613 semi-flat black and painted starter and solenoid except back cover and nose.

      Here's a pic of a brand new one on the assembly line in 1963. It appears to be painted entirely, including the back side of the solenoid mounting screws. That would pretty much tell us that the starter was complete when painted.

      The rear portion of the aluminum nose that is not visible when the starter is installed is not painted. I would say that this means the starter was vertical when painted with the nose in a hole on the paint table.
