    K-19 Smog

After driving my 1967 K19 smog car( 327), all of a sudden it starts back firing out thur the right exhaust, lightkly on deacceleration and loud on full throttle. I took the atr pump belt off and it stopped. any ideas. I know there are not many of the 1966 and 1967 csrsd out here. dale

Very possibly a failed mixture control valve (the 66-67 term for what later became known as the diverter valve).

I agree - when the diaphragm in the mixture control valve (or in the diverter valve) fails, the valve defaults to wide open, so the A.I.R. pump outputs constantly to the air manifolds (and into the exhaust manifolds); normally on over-run (high vacuum) the valve closes and dumps the pump output. When it pumps constantly with a failed diaphragm, significant backfiring (actually after-firing) is quite common.

If you do need a mixture control valve, good luck trying to find an NOS example. And, if you do find one, it'll likely take a lot of "long green" to buy it. However, Bill Hodel may be able to rebuild your valve.

          Dale,

Here's how your K-19 valves looked like when I re-plated them in 2006:

I think the diaphragms in these valves were already shot when I re-plated them.

They look good but maybe see what you can do with the innards.

These are the back-flow prevention valves. They should be checked but they are unlikely to be the direct cause the sort of problem Dale is experiencing. However, they could be the underlying source of the problem. If one of these valves fail, it allows hot exhaust gasses to flow back into the mixture control valve and the AIR pump. This will destroy the mixture control valve and pump in short order.

The back-flow valves can be easily checked. Just blow into each end. You should not be able to blow any air into the threaded end. If you can, the valve is junk and must not be used in an operating AIR system.

                Re: K-19 Smog

Thank you gentleman, I will try the recommended tests on the diverter valve and the anti back fire valves. Ara thank you for your offer, I will let you know what I find. This is the first time it has not worked in 46 + years. John H. I have lost your Email address could I have it again? Ara, I would like to add the K-19 cars to my list, you can email it to me. That would make 43, 1966 and 1967 K-19 cars as I remember. I see some K-19 cars on some of the TV auctions, but dont know if they are on my list or not. My list has not been given to ANYONE. Thank you again Dale
