    Differential broken ear

Is it possible to repair the broken ear on a 1967 differential? A car I purchased has only three bolts holding the rear spring in place due to the missing ear. I don't have the broken off piece and it's the original differential. I know it needs to come out, has anyone had luck repairing these?

Purchase another cover, used if you can find one. There will be a part number and a casting date on the cover, get the same part number.

Paragon might have a cover since they sell used parts for Corvettes as well as new parts.

I agree with the other responders; get a another cover. For one thing, if you don't have the broken-off piece, it will be virtually impossible to fix the cover. For another thing, welding gray cast iron is problematic no matter what anyone says.

On top of everything else, these covers are not rare. A lot of Corvettes have gone to "Corvette-heaven" and left their covers behind. The same cover was used from 1965 to 1979 although the covers are dated.

Pat Ikerd at Ikerd's Corvette in Bedford, IN usually has hundreds of these covers. Make sure you get one that is clean and doesn't have corrosion-caused "pock-marking". To me, a clean, non "pock-marked" cover would be more important than a date-correct one.

What's the consensus on dating of the ..375 cast # covers ? I haven't seen many, but IMO, cast dates didn't start before early calendar 1969, or maybe mid-1968.

What do the TIM&JG's say ?

As the others mention just replace the cover. I would use a Muskegon HD cover over a stock cover myself.

Wayne, you may be right, but when it comes to judging it's tough to see either way.

My two cents! Me thinks that a replacement cover and my safety is more important than any date correct cover alive! Think about going down the Interstate at 70-80MPH and the other cover bolt drops on the pavement. That would be the ride of your life. Maybe the last!

                    Re: Differential broken ear

My ear was broken unknown to me. Also one of the bolts were broken. When I took the rear end apart, I found the main spring was broken in half right in the middle of the diff. I must have driven like that for a long time because the jagged edges of the spring were smoothed out. I shiver every time I think of it. I think it all started when a dealer replaced my strut rod that they bend by lifting the car by the strut rod. They probably torqued it down to spec while still on the lift.

Look at the "also viewed" items in this ebay ad. You can buy one with a pre-broken ear for only $44.99. What a deal!

Maybe Tim, our original poster, could get a "core credit" of $44.99 by sending his broken one in when he buys a good used one.

The eBay one must be for an early 1973, as 1963, 64 and early '65 rear diff covers were cast # 3830303. Note no cast date by the filler plug.
