AO Body Sequence Numbers/letters

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what AO Smith did when they hit the end of the alphabet when sequencing the bodies? I know my 66 AO body is V31 with a serial number 21,061. Did they start over again? Double letters, like AA? What have people experienced with late 66 AO bodied cars?

hi Rob, my car is #T103 early 19,000 VIN. i think i heard they start over every 500 then move on to the next letter? so your V might be right if this is true.

Theoretically Z 500 would be 13000 bodies. If AOS made at least half of the bodies, they could have gone over the A-Z range. It would be interesting to hear from a late 27000 plus car or two to determine what they did.

My car I believe is Y246. Not sure if that is a Y or not. It's #20,529, late Apr '66. Not sure if the image is going to load or not.0204131654.jpg

I actually think you have a "U" and not a Y there. My car is 21,063 and it's V31. Your car is approximately 500 cars prior to mine and your body sequence number is approximately 250 prior to mine. Considering AO Smith built about 1/2 the bodies that lines up nice.

I thought a bit more about it after the earlier post and I would agree. I would agree with you, it makes more sense that it would be a U. Especially given that Matt's is a T.

I'm the original owner of AOS '67 conv. 17534 and body number (backward G) 216 in yellow crayon. Could anyone tell me what the letter correct would be? Thanks. Bill

Rob & Wayne, Just looked at my 66 Cp, AOS body #A-4733, Dated K24, (June 24), s/n 25,66X, Passenger floodboard number is Z422. So it looks as though there is a good chance that they ran out of Letters.
