    C-1 Rear Differential Rebound Straps

    Hi--

While accomplishing my recent wheel rim/tire upgrade, I noticed, (I had noticed previously and forgotten), that I did not have rear differential rebound straps on my '61 'Vette. Is the lack of the subject straps a safety issue???

    Thanks In Advance,
    Rob Vanderhoeven

You would have to drive over a really big bump, possibly catch air, to get the rear end to drop so much that the driveshaft yoke would pull out of the tranny.

Thanks for the quick response Troy--good information to know!!! I beat on the old hot rod, but not that much to get it airborne! Hope you have a great week!

Not sure about a '61, but when I lift my 60 with a two post lift the rear u joint will bind up without the straps. If this happened while driving you will bust a u joint and/or yoke. I don't think GM would have spent the money putting them there if the car didn't need them.

          Thanks Steve--

You make an excellent point. Since I have a modified drivetrain, (Muncie 4 speed), I am not confident that the physical dimensions are the same as those of the stock '61 transmission; and therefore, I do not know if the driveshaft yoke has the same travel before it would pull loose/free from the tranny as Troy intimated. I checked my Corvette Central catalogue, and of course the rebound straps are listed; I will order them as well as the rivet tool. Thanks to you and Troy!!
