    1960 door windows

Removing door windows from my 1960 to replace window runs. The passenger side window "door glass seal" was as pictured in CC p/n 281014 and was preventing me from getting the window out. It was fragile and broke away easily and then the window came right out. How do you get the window in and out with this piece intact?

Assuming the rubber is still pliable, with all the top trim removed, you can angle the glass slightly and spread the door opening slightly from the inside to help with clearance so you don't tear the seal. Loostening the rear door run will also give you some more wiggle room. Good luck, Dan

Yes a new rubber "gutter" seal is flexible enough to squeeze it into the opening. However, you MUST install the outer stainless trim before the window goes back in or you won't be able to install the trim later.

It's held in with either 4 small screws fastened to door top horizontal reinforcement('56 to mid/late '59), or
with 2 T-Studs which have nuts on the underside of the upper door.(mid/late '59 to '62).

If the window is installed you cannot access either type of fastener.

Many a door has been worked on over the years so the upper SS trim could have been changed from one type to another. The trims are different based on which fastening method is used.

I use a wide sheet of wax paper along the upper outer door trim to help slide the rubber gutter of the window assembly in. You have to wiggle, wiggle, wiggle to get it in. Hardest part is getting the forward roller into the opening and into the forward track. It's usually hit-or-miss. Slightly spreading the top opening of the door is sometimes necessary. Every door is a little different and often requires a bit of luck to get assembled.

        Thanks Richard & Dan,

How important is that gutter section? Does it keep water out of the door when the window is up? Mine was very fragile and broke off easily. The other side doesn't have the gutter on it at all. The seal around the windows is good and I may not replace it unless I really need the gutter section on the bottom seal. Also this is a power window car.

I only install them if I have the glass apart, but not really needed unless you plan on getting the car very wet all the time. If find them more of a pain than not.

However, if getting judged, keep in mind you'll loose points if they're not there.

Not being judged so I will leave them off.

            Thanks
