    4 speed serial numbers ?

At what point in the assembly line did the 1965 4 speeds get the vin stamp ? Was it the same stamp and holder that was used on the block (BB) ?

    Bill -

The transmission was VIN-stamped right after it was bolted to the engine, early on the Engine Dress Line; until about November, the same gang-holder was used for the VIN derivative on both the engine pad and the transmission. In November, the format for the transmission stamp changed ("S" replaced the leading "5"), so there were two different gang holders for the rest of the model year.

Here's an example of John's explanation. My car, St. Louis D6 trim tag, produced the first day after the strike was over. I'm guessing that the engine/trans was somewhere on the dresss line, and the new rules applied in November, although the first stamp (on the left) may have occured the last working day before the strike (Sept 25th ?).
P.S. the assembly stamping is P0916.

I must add that I've seen a 510137x, with the 5 overstamped with an "S" of larger font. When this would have occured, I don't know.

Mine was over stamped as well. The number alignment/mis-alignment is exactly the same as the engine pad so there was definitely only one gang holder used on my car.

anyone have a good road map as to where the vin stamp is on the transmission. mine is installed in the car but I cant locate it. I thought it was on the drivers side but can it be seen with the trans in and the shift levers installed?

Here's the stamp on the 2nd-to-last 1965 Corvette. The view is looking up from the ground; you can see the edge of the sidecover, on the drivers side, at the bottom of the pic.

For a car that's been sitting in a barn for 25+ years, old "563" gets a lotta press.

And to think we still haven't mentioned the 3858174 "HF" block .
