Yes but you need to read the rules very carefully! The game changes if the car has received a BowTie. It is spelled out in the Judging Reference Manual

It is a BowTie car. Since it will not actually be judged for the 5th star, I thought there might be a chance that it could be Flight judged. I'll have to read further. I guess I over looked it. Don, maybe to Rochester. Florida's too far, especially in January. Snow, Ice etc. plus I'll be on a "fixed" income by then. Woohoo. I've been kicking myself for not trying the PV in New Orleans.

Jerry, The answer to your question is Yes. I have a 1971 car that received a Bowtie in 2004 and a Duntov/5th star in 2010.

OK, I just read the judging reference manual, section 8: 5 & 13. The way section 8: 13B reads is that I have to get an invitation from the Division National Team leader to try for the Duntov. Correct?

Jerry, I believe that's correct, at least that's the same way I'm reading it.

Jerry, I don't think its that formal. To my knowledge as a member you can register any car to be flight judged wether it has a Bowtie award or not. You have a prerequisite requirement for your PV (car must have a flight award at any NCRS event no more than 3 years prior), but not for Flight Judging. If you want to verify things then notify the National Judging Chairman. The NCRS is all about getting the cars out to the events.

I think Jerry's original question was can he do the 5th Star display and Duntov final judging at the same convention. I agree that should be answered by Dave Brigham.

If that is his question he should clear it with Dave Brigham. That is exactly what I did with my 1971.

I thought you did that, Dave, but was waiting for verification.

Yes, that's the question. It has a Regional Top Flight and the Bowtie, so PV at another regional and then the Duntov are next on the adgenda.

Jerry, you said it has a regional Top Flight. In order to qualify for a Duntov Award, it must achieve a score of 97 without driving points at a regional event, not just a Top Flight...so if you haven't scored 97 at the regional level, you might want to reconsider before doing anything to the car to improve it to attain a 97...that could put your Bowtie Award in jeopardy...especially if it is coming back for a 5th Star re-evaluation.

I have a dilemma then. It scored 95.6 and I had it judged just to see what it would do. I went the regional just to get the Bowtie sign off, but I thought I might as well have it judged too. Didn't worry how it would score. It scored better than I thought and that got me thinking about the Duntov. The two big hits were the seats and exhaust. Lost 20 pts on each. Seats are split and the mufflers were changed years ago, and they had holes in them plus the pipes had holes too. I had them taped up they were so bad. I was told not to replace anything until after the Bowtie. I had no choice but to replace the exhaust afterwards. I found NOS mufflers along the way, but just recently installed new pipes and the mufflers. I had an old pair of seats that I had recovered so I could save the originals. The soft top is original to with some splits so I lost condition pts. OK, now I have new exhaust, new seats to pop in (maybe) and I have the original hard top that is nice, so I could have it judged with it instead of the soft top. Is that enough to get it above 97? I don't know. Is it etchical to have it judged with those changes or just do the PV?

Jerry, Before you go touching/updating anything more, you should probably be talking to the National Team Leader for your division and get his thoughts on the route you want to take. The car can be judged with either top, but as far as doing anything else/updating/restoring anything other than cleaning, it could put your pursuit of the Five Star Bowtie Award in jeopardy and possibly the Bowtie Award too.
