I did tie the expansion tank to the oil filler tube with a piece of rope. Since my car has hood blocks I removed the hood block closest to the battery.
Then I got a huge plastic bag and managed to man handle the heavy battery into the zip lock bag.
My son is almost 7Ft tall and works out every day. Can probably lift a SBC engine by himself.
So I called him and told him I wanted him to lift the battery out of the car. He lifted it like it was a toothpick. After he got past the fender he removed it vertically.
I am too weak for that.
AC Battery 24-60 for a driver and guy who doesn't care about getting wacked 12 points. Pull off the decals and forget about it.
Judging Reference manual explains the various deducts on the battery. Most of you know that.
Nothing worse for me that going to a local cruise in and seeing these gorgeous restored engine compartments featuring nice green, etc battery. Yuk.
Remember Tom Kobman is a long time NCRS member. He owns Restoration Battery. They don't come any nice than my/our friend Tom.
If I had planned on showing my 63 again (don't) then I would call Tom. Huge ad in "The Driveline". JD

    John,

You can also use a Walmart battery and remove the labels and it's all black. Full 3yr replacement warrantee if any problems and all there batteries are dated so get a fresh one.

I seem to remember they are made by Johnson Controls and they may make the Delco battery but not 100% sure.

Hi Tim, Thanks very much but it would bug me if my 63 had the Walmart battery even though they may be made by the same company as Delco. Much appreciated though.

I would be very careful not to disturb the lower elbow on the expansion tank as it is pressed in and not welded as later years are.

About 3 or 4 years ago I pulled the LAST wet battery out of my 63 and replaced it with a new Restoration "dated" unit. It was the hardest job I've done in years. I covered everything in the surrounding area with plastic rather than the battery itself because I needed every last bit of grip I could get to lift that thing out. There was no way I could get my hands under it as it stood on end, rather I had to press in from both sides as hard as I could and lift straight up. I can assure you that I will never do that again in this lifetime. In the reverse; putting in the new one was a pleasure as it must weigh about half as much. My advice; buy the lightest battery you can find unless you have a 7' tall son like JD to help you. As a side note, I just helped my son take one out of a 62. That was almost as much fun, specially when my help was in the form of verbal encouragement.

Battery problem solved for my 63, the LWC. Going to listen to the good MD from MD. Doc Mike said swing that baby in there.
Had my original tar top rebuilt two years ago.
Wasn't sure I wanted a rebuilt in the car. But let me tell you it just doesn't discharge at all. Checked it again this morning and it still has 12 plus volts in it.
Weighs a fraction of an original battery so going to install it. End of story. JD

Thanks for ALL the help on the battery info and the expansion tank, I'm really glad I joined NCRS. I've picked up the battery today & will be attempting to install it on Sunday. Wish me luck .... I'm planning to fully restore my 63 so I'm sure I'll have one or two more questions
