Interior knobs and lighter deductions-- don't understand

'66 L79 'Vert #1241-- deduction 1(O)+1(C) for "knobs and lighter" remarks "should be Caseo (or, could be illegible) 63" Can anyone interpret this for me (in pursuit of points for Duntov that are cost effective to fix)-- does this mean ALL interior knobs + lighter, or only the lighter knob? What can I replace them with-- are repros going to get me the points?

    Much obliged

Lighter element should be stamped "casco 63"

Seeing your NCRS member would suggest your new(er) to NCRS and possibly judging. The lead judge for each segment should or could have been the person to better answer your questions or concerns. They could have given better direction (to you) has to what they were seeing or what they wanted or needed to see as they determined what points they would allow or in this case deduct. Without seeing your car and it's components we in some cases would be second guessing their judgement call.

The judging manual can answer many of your questions. Do you own the most current judging manual applicable to your car and do you feel comfortable what it's telling you in most cases?

Thanks for the advice-- yes, new to this. First judging at chapter meet (raw score 96.5) recently. I will know next time to have judges expain better exactly what the deductions mean. Just received the manuals (incl. PV) and plan to become familiar. I find, however, that the advice of seasoned and astute members is very efficient for me on the steep part of the learning curve with limited time before my next judging to recoup enough points toward potential Duntov award.

obtw-- anyone have a source for above item (repro) that recoups the points??

        thanks

this is what you are looking for (but I would find $175 way over the top personally)...

WHOA-- $175 for 2 points? I'll pass on that one (law of diminishing returns). BUT, is there a repro that can capture those points (need 'em) at a less-than-obscene price???

You can frequently find nice used Casco 63 lighters at swap meets for a few bucks. They're not NOS, but............

I wouldn't pay anywhere NEAR $175. for a NOS element.

Here's a NOS on EBAY now. Search for Casco 63 lighter.

                  Stephen,

I have a bag of old elements in the garage somewhere and I may have a used but functional "63 casco" with the correct white porcelain insulator. It'll get 1 point off for condition though as it's used. PM me your mailing address and if I can find one in the pile it's yours.

p.s. it may be the one I installed in my '59 a few years ago but forgot to test. Because it's the wrong type for the C1's, due to my 'tupidity it kinda didn't work right(dead short) and blew back out at me when I tested it while driving to a Regional for Flight Judging. Fried my ammeter to ciggy lighter wire harness.

Chuck, Did originals installed at St Louis have the ash guard? And I'd ask the seller if the insulator is the white porcelain, it should be, correct?

Steve, Slow down a little. Get more familiar with NCRS judging, and your own car and what is correct and needs to be addressed or changed. Shooting for Duntov is a bit aggressive after only one time out. Keep in mind the flight judging score is only part of it. The performance of the car is another to consider. Participate in observer judging to see more in site as to what judges are looking for. Write out a detailed plan of attack that covers both aspects. This is only advice (IMO) to avoid disappointment and over spending of $. Welcome to the awards portion of NCRS.

I believe they all had it. I've never seen a Casco 63 without one.

Steve, Gene has given you the best advise so far. When I entered this game many years ago, I spent the first couple of years watching and judging the class I wanted to participate in and drove the car before I attempted to have it judged. As Gene said slow down I have seen a number of owners burn out and become frustrated with the hobby by rushing it. Depending on the condition of the car (based on your initial raw score very good) and your skill set it make take a year or two for Duntov. Don't let this hobby take over you life because if you do it may prove very rewarding or a total disaster. By the way, after all these years I never got beyond Top Flight as I really enjoy building/driving these cars and found out the stress of the show circuit was not for me!

+1, sometimes the journey is more rewarding than the destination. I recently bought a former Duntov car, that has been in storage for 20 years, as the owner had nothing left to win. Be careful what you wish for, but NCRS has much more than Duntov awards that are as much, if not more, rewarding.
