What does the green paint on this brake spring signify?

Joe, I think at one time the entire spring was green. Most likely for identification or protection from rust.

It is the pull back spring(s) for an RPO 684 and 687 car. I've got the part number somewhere.

I have the print for that somehere and it started out as BLACK. A FLA guy named Ray (I think) who was heavy into air box cars and research gave me the print to use in finding him springs..............which I did. Bob

You guys are just too good. Yes the high temp big brake Springs on RPO 684 were green. These are on the 54 George Moore special that received a drivetrain transplant from a 57 factory race car in 1957.
