The more I read, the more confused I get.
Is the thermosat housing painted before installation? Are the mounting bolts painted dull aluminum?

Do the valve covers have overspray?

The thermostat housing is installed on the intake manifold before any paint operations so the housing, bolts and the edge of the gasket will be coated with dull aluminum paint.

On 63-67 engines with aluminum intake manifolds/valve covers, the section of the bare cylinder head between the manifold and valve covers is painted with the same dull aluminum paint.

This paint process was anything but precise and a lot of over spray usually covered the outer portion of the intake manifold and inner portion of the valve cover.

You may also see a bit of dull aluminum over the orange paint on the manifold end of the by pass hose.

Be sure you use a paint called dull aluminum instead of silver. I think Krylon still makes it in spray cans.
