    Re: original sounding mufflers

The last set of pipes I put on my 63 back in about 92 are aluminized and welded. They are of the 2-1/2" size and oval along the main length. They were very difficult to get lined up well, specially when you include the galvenized heat shields (63 only) at the back, and try to use 63 rear hangers. I finally had to cut off the brass ground "wedges" and go with woven ground straps in order to eliminate vibrations and rattles, and to get the outlet pipes centered in the valance bezzels. Back then, I believe (I was told) the only replacement pipes available in 2-1/2" were a sort of generic one size fits all from 63 thru 82 (w/o cat converter) to the outlet end of the muffler. Well, after all I went through I ended up with a very mellow sounding L-76 (ick!). I would love to put on N-11's if it wasn't for all the trouble I went though to get these lined up, and I don't really want to cut the welds. I still have a set of "Cherry Bombs" on the shelf too with the nice 2-1/2" curved inlet pipes and all, but can't get myself to make the change.
