    Work Bench Build Details

I would like to build a work bench for my newly remodeled garage. I want it to be about 7' long by about 2 feet wide. Does anyone have a plan or parts list for a work bench that they built?

    Thanks, Larry

I have two benches in my "toy room". One is 8' x 30" x32"high and it has a Corian solid surface for a bench top, because it was free. The frames were 2x4's, I can send you a few pix if you'd like.

The other bench is 139" x 30" x 32" high and is a laminated counter top, also free. The supports are 4 kitchen cabinet base units wit about 6' clear between the two pairs at each end. There is also a metal bracing in the center.

Both benches support tools, boxes, parts....and me all at the same time.

Both benches have kitchen wall cabinets above with recessed fluorescant lights, all were also free.

Counter tops can be purchased already laminated to the length you desire at you local big box store like Home depot, Menards, Lowes, etc.

Remember, it's what it's called a WORK BENCH, function over looks. I made my car cost too much to risk driving and my work bench too little to care if abused. Got one right but would have saved a lot of $$$'s by doing it the other way around.

I built mine with 4X4 legs and 2X6's and a few 2X4's for cross pieces. I wanted it to be SOLID. For the top, I used 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood screwed and glued together. I made it sized so the top could be a standard 8 ft counter top from Home Depot, Lowe's etc. on top of that. I got one with the backsplash (to keep things from falling off the back) and in a light color (which makes finding things on it easier). Because the counter top is not the most durable surface, I designed it so it could easily be removed and replaced. I think a replacement counter top is less than $80. I have had it on for 5 years now and am very happy with it. It's not even close to needing the top replaced yet

Dennis, the top could always be covered with sheet metal. Gary....

The welding table, sure; but the workbench? Not in my shop.
