The pad on a 60 I recently looked over has an inverted 8 in the vin number. Has anyone ever seen this on a known original stamp? I would also be interested in any comments on the stamping and pad in general. I very closely looked at the pad for broach marks and can't really find any but the surface does has a rough appearance. There are also some light scratches that don't look to me like broach marks. Thanks a lot for any comments. Stan

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
Edward, Yes I think the car is an original 290 FI but what I was wondering about is if anyone had any comments on the 3rd digit of the VIN where the smaller circle of the 8 is on the bottom. I have seen other 8's where both circles appear to be the same size. I didn't know if this particular 8 had any significance in revealing whether or not the stamp would be considered original. Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
Stan, I should have looked at the VIN stamp, as now I see the number eight is upside down, I was thinking the letter S on the prefix is what you were referring to.I really cannot say I have ever seen this before, There are many stamp pad eras. maybe someone will chime in.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
Edward, I also noticed last night on the upside down eight that it really looks more like 2 3's placed side by side, one being a mirror image of the other but the middle leg on the 3's are not connected. I have seen several 8's in vin numbers on the pad but never one that looks like this. Stan- Top

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
Does anyone know when the equal top/bottom 8's were used vrs the unequal top/bottom. Somehow I thought the unequal 8's came out late in the sixties? Early sixties had 'equal' circle 8's or were they a mixed bag like everything else?

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
The picture I have (see first post) was from a 1960 but I can't verify that it is the original stamp. The center part of the 8 appears to be missing. giving the look of 2 3's with short center legs facing each other. Stan- Top

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
These numbers are put in the holder one at a time and an upside down character would be common. Union workers are not going to take time to change an "8" upside down.
That pad looks 100% real and this is just another case of a union worker striving for perfection. Somehow those workers knew that the NCRS judges would check their work so that's why we see so many perfect Corvettes at these meets.

Re: stamp pad fonts inverted 8
I think the pad was either lightly decked at some point in it's life, and/or someone sanded it to clean it up, but it looks quite real to me. IMO the upside down 8 is just a hiccup when the gang holder was loaded. Not a perfect world when these cars were built. Personally, I like to see oddities like this because it shows how simple errors in manufacturing were made. When you have a 50-50 chance at something.........
John Hinckley posted this photo of a set of gang characters some time ago. I took the liberty to make a mirror image of it to be able to read the characters easier and show the various fonts and features.
