Re: 2014 National Convention
As usual, you are right on top of it! I'm originally from KC. I refer to Arthur Bryant's as the promised land!!! The neighborhood is not good, but they do have security in the parking lot. I've never had any trouble there.

Re: 2014 National Convention
Perhaps because I worked the streets in a large urban city for 20 years I didn't at all feel reluctant about the neighborhood. I guess it is all in what you are used to. The BBQ Tour talked about in the Tribune story might be a worthwhile activity for the convention -- even if some of us did it on our own. In fairness I am not sure I could handle four BBQ places in one day, and I hesitate to think about what the next day would be like -- but the thought is appealing none-the-less. Re: 2014 National Convention
I visited Arthur Bryant’s home location on the way to the San Antonio National Convention. I hit there as the starting point of the Road Tour and we hit at least two other nationally known Q joints along the way. I can highly recommend it. I am told there are several locations in "suburban" areas, but the pictures on the wall (assUming no decoration changes; and it looked to me like it had been some time since redecoration was thought of) make the original location worth the trip.

Alas, I haven't been to Arthur Bryant's in a couple of years. But the last time I was there it hadn't changed much. Still pictures of famous people on the wall taken during a visit to Bryant's. I did see Wilt Chamberlain in there once, too. Yeah, four BBQ joints in a day would be pushin' it a little, even for me.

Re: 2014 National Convention
Guys--I ate at Bryant's a month ago--it's still the same place where legends were made. Everybody is welcome and in all of the years that I've been there, I've never heard of a single problem with the neighborhood--not once. When I was there a couple months ago, the mayor was sitting two tables over from me. There's nothing like a beef sandwich with fries and a cold one at Bryant's. Just be sure to have plenty of paper napkins as all that enjoyment can be pretty messy! :-DRegion VII Director (serving members in Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas).

Re: 2014 National Convention
Terry, We look forward to eating our way across America. Now we just have to get rid of the ICE here north of Toronto. 250,000 homes without power. We did not lose power but the devastation of our trees is major.

Re: 2014 National Convention
Morton's on State Street is the original location.
There are a couple more locations, one even near Ohare airport.
Be prepared to pay for parking at the downtown location, whether in a lot or on the street. One may not want to leave their Corvette on the street with as much traffic moving through there.
For a couple of better options to taste what makes Chicago style cuisine famous, stop at a Portillos' for a Beef "Sang-a-wich"' Hot Dog or a Burger!
Or for the best Chicago pizza, Lou Malnatti's. These are personal biases, and I know there are manny manny options to choose from.- Top

Re: 2014 National Convention
I spent a week in KC recently while at the Mecum auction. We ate BBQ at a different place every night and at lunch, and it was all good. Not a bad place anywhere in that city.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top
