    RE: E1969 Starter

I am trying to determine if my starter assy. is correct for my 69. According to the 4TH edition of the 1968/69 judging manual, I should have P.N. 1108338. I purchased the 69 in the early 70's s/n 7020--, 350/350 4SP. I had the starter rebuilt and carries a PN. 1108361 date of 8H12. Is this correct for judging purposes.

What is the starter nose configuration? Is it a cast iron nose or an aluminum nose?

That would be a cast iron hose.

Some sources claim that the 1108361 starter was used for early 1969. However, I don't see how it could have been. Here's why: the GM #1108361 was used for 1968 with small block and manual transmission. All such 1968 applications used a 12-3/4" flywheel with 153 tooth ring gear. The starter for this application used an aluminum nose with long/short starter bolts.

All 1969 applications used a 14" flywheel with 168 tooth ring gear. Starters for these applications used a cast iron nose with 2 long starter bolts.

My information shows that the GM #1108361 starter used the aluminum starter nose GM #1968122 and that's exactly the starter nose that should be used with 12-3/4" flywheel applications.

It is very possible to install a cast iron nose on a starter originally equipped with an aluminum nose.

I agree that the date on your 1108361 starter seems consistent with the build date of your car. I just cannot understand how such a starter could have been originally configured to work for 1969 applications. In other words, if it was originally equipped with a cast iron nose, then it would not be an 1108361. As a matter of fact, the starter that was identical with the 1108361 but configured with a cast iron nose was the GM #1108338.
