    1956 Window Regulator

Will a 1960 window regulator work in a 1956 without any modification? I see that Corvette Central is showing the same part number for 56-62, but it appears as if the long arm is bent at a little different angle on the used examples I have. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, what problem are you trying to solve? Stripped large or small gears or ? Power or crank windows? Gary....

      Re: 1956 Window Regulator

Gary, I'm starting the restoration of a 1956 Corvette that was disassembled about 15 years ago, sold twice in this condition and moved from the East coast to my home in Colorado last month. I'm in the process of discovering what's missing, what parts can be restored, and what can be purchased new. Many of the parts don't appear to be original to this car, (Core support, trunk lid, hard top, and etc.) The window regulators I received both have broken springs and the splines for the handle are chewed up on one due to the use of vice grips. When I restored my 1960 Corvette in 1990 I was able to purchase window regulators from my local Chevy dealer very inexpensively, so I have the original functioning regulators (non power) from the '60 that I thought I might be able to use on the '56. Dimensionally the two regulators look very similar, but the bend in the long arms are slightly different and since the doors on the '56 are bare at this point I don't know how that difference will affect the window operation when I get to that point of the restoration. Sorry for the long reply to your question, but as you can imagine my fun with this project has just begun. Thanks, Chuck

Chuck, try Volume 17-3. Stay warm.

          Re: 1956 Window Regulator

          Chuck,

IIRC the window regulators 56-58 are different from 59-62. Not sure what the differences are since all I've owned are 1957's. Big gears can be replaced per the Restorer article Loren referred you to.

I've attached an article when I rebuilt my 57 window regulators. Thought I took photos, but if I did I'm unable to locate them.

The problem you're going to have is finding the window crank small gear assembly. If the hole is worn out and the window crank arm wobbles, then the whole crank assembly will need to be replaced.

You might try Corvette Central, Paragon, Grossmueller, etc. for good originals.

          Good luck,

          Gary
          ....

p.s. added some screen shots on the different crank small gear cups. IIRC the early ones are on the left and the 59-62 on the right. You might want to check with Joe Calcagno http://rarecorvettes.com/RARE/HowTo.html

Thanks Gary and Loren. I may rebuild the '56 regulators using the good gears from the '60 regulators I have. The how to articles will help.Chuck

              Re: 1956 Window Regulator

That's good info Gary thanks for sharing it. Chuck, The bends are different, possibly to clear some different internals of the two types of doors. I think you could get those '60 regulators to work, but you may have to change those bends slightly to get them to fit. if your doors are all apart it may be worthwhile to try. You would have to attach to the actual glass assembly to make sure they clear everything.

A while ago when restoring a '60, I had to remove it's driver side regulator. I had a NOS regulator and did some research on the part numbers because there was a obvious difference in the long arm and its bends near the mount flange. The part# on the original plastic wrapper of the NOS part was different than what was shown in the AIM for the '59/'60, or the '61-'62 as shown in the AIMs for those years.

So the newer NOS part# was a superseded number to replace the original part numbers as used and shown in the AIMs. Why, I never understood, but I think it was likely different so that it was compatible with earlier doors/windows, but not '56 to '57. The angle and shape of the bends in the long arm were the only difference that I could see. However, the P&A Catalogs show no reference to availability prior to 1959. From the 1979 P&A Catalog #14 3757665 LH Regulator 1959-1962 3757666 RH Regulator 1959-1962

1956-1957 AIM: 3723473 Regulator LH 3723474 Regulator RH There is no Supercession for these in the P&A books I have access to. However I did find a REM remark in the 1978 P&A Catalog, meaning it was removed from availability. The date was Oct 1, 1978. I have no idea what the regulator differences are between the '56-58 and the '59-'62, but here are some pictures of some originals I found on a ebay ad... HERE

Okay I deleted the pics, which I could see BTW, then added them again.

However, when I went to "Go Advanced" to edit the post, it totally changed my formatted text, combined all of my text together in one paragraph, so I had to re-edit the post and add whitespace again. Weird.

                      Richard,

How soon we forget. That' the ye ole A/A (switch editor to source mode) editor option to set the HTML formatting function in your browser. Next time click the A/A once or if formatting is lost in Go Advanced, use the back arrow to return and retain formatting.
