C3 Key Code Location on Door Lock

So where do I find the key code on the door lock so I can get a new key cut? I only have a copy and it's so warn out it doesn't work very well. I want to get one cut from the original code and I read I could find the code here.

    Thanks

Jeff there are a couple of guys on the TDB that can make a key for your car,It will require sending the lock cylinder of maybe even the spare tire lock. Pete Lindahl or Gary Beaupre. both are experts. I don't believe the C3 had the key codes stamped on lock cylinders as the C2 cars did. I Believe they may even be able to look at a pic of your old key and tell the cuts if its not worn to badly.

Send an email or PM to Peter Lindahl. You can find his contact info on the contacts list from the drop-down menue on the top two lines of this page.

I thought there was a key code on the door locks of the early C3s, but the two guys mentioned above can tell you for sure. I can absolutely tell you there is a key code on the side of the ignition lock of my 1970, and I would expect to find one on the door locks also. From the looks of your lock a little work with a wire brush to remove some of that rust might be a good thing.

Thanks guys. I did send Peter a pm. What exactly would the code look like? I did find a code on the back side of the cylinder. It was a letter followed by two numbers, 3 characters total.

On my 1972, the key code for the door and igmition lock is on the ignition lock and not on door locks. The code for the glove box, alarm and spare are on the glove box lock inside cylinder.

Jeff - Over the years, Briggs & Stratton stopped stamping the KEY NUMBERs on various original Production lock cases & lock cylinders & based on James' comment 1972 Production could well be when they stopped stamping the door lock cases. Whether it was a cost reduction or another theft deterrent effort since the door lock can be easily removed & then a key made to the KEY CODE for the KEY NUMBER stamped on the door lock case you would have a key to start the cars up thru 1973 GM Production. With 1974 GM Production, the ignition key was a stand alone key & the other key operated the "Glove, Door, & Trunk" (Spare Tire Lock on the Corvette) locks. Pete

I can verify, there are no codes stamped on the door locks of a '72. Pete was able to get enough information from photos of my key to cut a new key for me. I also verified you can get the oval key code off the inside cylinder of glove box lock.

Pete did the same for me once, it is the experience that counts, once you cut enough keys you get to know the numbers (1-6 ) many moons when I was at the GM dealerships I learned the numbers when re-coding lock cylinders. It seemed none of the guys liked that stuff, So it was up to me.

Got new keys from Pete today. Fantastic! I don't have to jiggle the key any more to start the car or open the door! Thanks Pete!
