Just got my new Quanta gas tank and compared it to the original one and it appears to be 1/2 inch taller. Its a 56, 57 new tank and Im hoping it will fit. CC doesnt list a 53 to 55 anymore. Have any of you put this tank in a 54? Any issues?? Thanks as always

Re: 54 gas tank
it will fit
you will have to bend the lower seam flange over - I mean over.....!!!!
That is the only tank we have....

Re: 54 gas tank
Hey Guy....if you have the opportunity to post a couple photos of the bend it would be great. I will be needing to go down this same road later in the year so a photo reference would be helpful - that is if you have the time.
Thanks!

Re: 54 gas tank
Take a flange pair of vice grips - if you have them
if not - a 2x4 and work the flange over a little at a time
if you pull your orig tank out your will see how the flange is bent
just have to duplicate it plus a little more
it is hidden in the well....so no one sees it.....1954 Corvette #3803 - Top Flight 2012, Bloomington Gold 2012,

Re: 54 gas tank
Hi guys, My tank is still average allthough it has baffels and isnt the original. Would cost about $100 to test and clean it up and then I still have an old tank. I think Im money ahead and will sleep better at night knowing my old tank wont develop a problem. For another $100, why not just replace it. It will be interesting to see how tight it is. Seems like this is the only tank available.- Top

Re: 54 gas tank
While you are at it buy the 56-57 fuel gauge sender too if you don't have a correct NOS sender that you are sure will continue to work. The 53-55 reproduction senders are junk.
As you know you will not need the 56-57 pick up pipe since that set up takes fuel through the top of the tank and 53-55 comes out the bottom. So screw a brass plug or bolt with sealant on it into the brass pipe fitting on the top of the sender. Or cut the pipe off below the fitting, crimp the pipe closed and fold it over on itself twice to prevent fuel from ever coming out.- Top

Re: 54 gas tank
That is my understanding. The sender unit is a variable resistor. I believe the resistor is the same for 6 and 12 volt. The difference is in the dash gauge that interprets the current that passed through the resistor and converts it to gauge needle movement.
Well that's my theory. Feel free to check it out with a more electrically minded restorer.- Top
