I'm planning on resealing my a/c compressor since I have to change the clutch anyway. I've read that there are two different shaft seals. The original ceramic type and a newer lip seal type. Are there real advantages to the newer seal? Just wondering since it requires an additional tool for proper installation. Also, where is a good source for these parts?? Thanks!!

Re: A6 compressor seal and parts question
It's been out since I own the car so I have no idea if it leaks or not. The compressor I have has been out for quite some time, I plan on dissasembling it, cleaning it and set it up for 134a since all of the hoses are out as well.- Top

Re: A6 compressor seal and parts question
Tom,
DON'T use the lip seal, it seals against the shaft much like the seal on the harmonic balancer. It will eventually damage the shaft. Use the ceramic seal that does not seal by rubbing the shaft.
The ceramic is a multi pieced seal that is attached to the shaft and spins with the shaft, not against it. The other half of the ceramic seal is attached to the case, therfore the only seal contact is ceramic to ceramic, not rubber to shaft.
The ceramic seal can be bought at most autopart stores. Auto Zone for 1 has them and the seals are made by the same company that I buy parts in bulk.
The ceramic seal is not expensive.

Re: A6 compressor seal and parts question
I understand the way the ceramic seal works, I've replaced many of them on commercial refrigeration hermetic compressors. They seem to work quite well. A question about them, is the installation tool really necessary? Seems they can be carfully slipped in and seated. Any thoughts??
Also, any recomendations for a source of O-ring kits for the compressor body? Thanks!- Top

For the A6 compressor itself (o-ring kit), purchase AC DELCO # 15-237 or GM # 6591956.
Another very good place to purchase items is www.ackits.com However, I am not certain if they stock/sell the desired ceramic seal shown above. You could call and ask, but the seal and o-rings kits should be available from anyone who handles AC DELCO.

Re: A6 compressor seal and parts question
Tom,
I use a tube on the case part of the seal that just fits over the shaft, it keeps the seal even as it is pushed into the O-ring. It lets you feel it snap in place.
The inner seal needs to fit the 9/16 flats that are ground on the shaft, that's where the tool may be needed. As you have experiance in refridgeration, the problem with the shaft seal is that it needs the O-ring protector that slips over the shaft and a tool that will let you know you are on the flats that make sure the seal turns with the shaft.

Larry------
Unfortunately, the GM #6599114 has been rather recently discontinued. However, there might still be some around. It was replaced by GM #12323914. Both were/are also known as Delco #15-2191 but I don't know if the 12323914 still contains a ceramic seal.
The o-ring kit, GM #6591956, is also discontinued through GM. However, I believe it's still available through Delco under the Delco part number of 15-237. I do not know if it's compatible with R-134a, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: A6 compressor seal and parts question
I used a nos GM ceramic seal on my R12 A6 several years ago. I don't recall where I got this tool kit, but I think it was about $75.... 8 years ago.
Make sure you wash the felt wick in solvent and squeeze it dry. It's located in the shaft housing.
