    Tach cable noise

I installed a new CC tach cable in in 230 hp 1960 and it rattles. I pulled the cable and greased it with some white lube and that helped a little. Any suggestions??

    Steve,

The noise may be coming directly from the tachometer gauge itself. You may want to try to test the gauge without the bends in the cable to eliminate one or the other. In order to do this you'll have to remove the cable from the generator and from under the dash, and temporarily route it through a hole in the firewall straight back from the gauge.

If you have a spare tach cable, just use that one.

Then with a helper and a reversible drill, chuck the cable end carefully in a drill, keep as straight as possible, and run it in reverse and observe the gauge for noise....or not.

This may help narrow it down.

Richard, I just had the tach rebuilt so I don't think that is the problem. I will listen a little more carefully today but I am pretty sure that it is the cable making the noise.

        Steve,

Sometimes sharp bends can make it hang up a bit, bind, and cause noise. But I just remembered......

.....another issue I've found on the reproduction cables is that they're inner drive tip that connects to the gauge is a bit too long, and actually can hang up and bind at the drive bushing(which is the shaft/magnet assembly), when you tighten the thumbscrew very tight.

Try this.....Just reach up and loosen the thumbscrew holding the cable end on to the tach, maybe a half turn or so. See if it quiets it down. If it does, that's the problem.

I had to grind off a 1/16" or so of the cable end to free it from binding there on my last CC speedo cable. I found this out by accident(or was it just I don't trust repro stuff lately?) before I connected the cable to the transmission. I was ready to connect it to the tranny and went to turn the cable end to see it turn and to line it up better. It was jammed.

Steve, White lub isn't what it used to be. Ask Duke for the proper lubricant. JD

Hey SteveI had the same problem on my 63. Corvette America or any of the after market co. Sell a grease fitting that screws onto the tach cable. It worked for me. Harry

              Harry,

I recently repaired a speedometer where a prior owner used that grease fitting at the end of the cable. This is what it looked like inside. It took a while to get it clean for rebuild. Obviously they used heavy chassis grease. I use a minimal amount of CRC Power Lube. Works fine.
