Flight judging requires the air cleaner assembly, distributor top ignition shield, spare tire lock, spare tire lid down exposing spare, jack and handle to all come off, floor mats and glove box contents be looked at for judging. A few years ago Roy asked that other parts, oil cap, rad cap, battery caps, gas cap, dip sticks, power steering caps to remain in place. What about other removable parts not considered service or inspection caps? Such as lighter, ash tray, c3 stowage box trays, or any other interior or body parts?

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
That may well be the case, But what is Roy and/or Dave's ruling on parts removal. There is not much said in the reference manual on this. Roy's request items in the engine bay, gas caps remain stationary, and that was in his judging chairmans message of the Restorer quite a time back.
Hopefully Dave will chime in.- Top

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
The new '67 manual states the owner is to remove the ash tray for judging. On the lighter, there are markings and other features that require it to be out to be judged, so I am assuming this would be done by the owner, but it doesn't specify that.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
We as judges should never remove anything. It should always be the owner. Remember judge if you remove it and it breaks you buy one for the owner. I know the owner signed to hold us harmless, but.............do the right thing!

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
The items you mentioned, i.e. shielding, spare tire lock, air cleaner lid, jack and jack tools should be removed.
The other items should remain in pace until the judges request that you, the owner remove them or as in the case
of the lighter insert it to make sure it glows and I operational. Jugs are instructed to not remove or handle parts
being judged. We should respect the cars.- Top

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
Gene, all the items you mentioned will be taken off for judging Except the radiator cap. I have been to a lot of meets, and never have we asked an owner to take off the radiator cap. Not knowing when ops was done, we have no way of knowing if there is pressure still in the radiator. That could cause injury and damage to the car. However, the other items should be taken off the can ONLY once a judge asks the owner to do so. In fact, for interiors I usually ask the owner to open the glove box door for me....ARA- Top

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
All-------
I understand a new judging classification is in the offing. To be called "Excalibur" it will require the car to be completely disassembled on the judging field. This will include complete disassembly of the engine, transmission, differential, interior, etc, etc. Master judges will then scrutinize every individual part for originality and condition. No stone will be left unturned. Cars with a score of 99% will receive the "Excalibur" award. All cars must be re-assembled by the owner and removed from the judging field no later than the end of the event.

Re: Parts Removal for Flight Judging
Yeah, the rumor is that there is one guy who will bring in a truckload of NOS parts and just build his car out of boxes to save the disassembly time. Didn't catch a name but the word is the car will be "not for sale" when complete..

If I judge Mech I shortly after the Ops judges finish, I like to ask the OJ to remove the radiator cap. There is no better entertainment than watching Ol' Faithful on the judging field.Kramden- Top
