    56-62 Arm rests

Dose anybody know of any instructions or a video for installing new foam and covers on 59 arm rests? Thanks, Roger

    Roger,

I'm doing a set for my 58 and the originals (or what I believe to be originals) were just the vinyl over the armrest. The covers I removed were adhered to the tops of the armrests and not the bottom. The excess vinyl is trimmed to clear the ribs of the armrest and glued inside the armrest. Seems pretty straight forward right now, but then again I have not started to glue anything yet............

a heatgun/hair blow drier will help conform the vinyl to the arm rest.mike

As Mike said a heat gun helps a lot. The vinyl can be carefully heated (don't over heat) up in an oven and then slipped over the arm rests. If you need to move the seams around a bit an upholstery supply shop should have long small diameter pins (not sure what they're really named). IIRC they're blunt ended and not sharp like needles.

Tom, I have my original armrests. They don't seem to have any foam. Was the foam used on any original armrests? Roger

            Roger,

I can not say for certain, but I took apart what I believe were the originals from my car and the vinyl was adhered to the top surface of the arm rest with no foam.

I have another set here that I got with a bunch of parts I bought. Those also look original and while I have not removed the covers, I can tell there is no padding underneath. Now, I am dealing with 1958 arm rests at the moment. From what I know, the only difference between 58 and the other years is the grain of the vinyl. 58 had a pebble grain and later years were smoother.

One thing I did do was trim the vinyl inside a bit where it wraps around the front curve. The vinyl kind of bunches around the curve and there would be visible bumps. A little t******* on the inside minimized the bumps.

I have not glued anything yet as it is too cold in the garage and I don't want to stink up the basement with contact cement smell.
