I understand it is very easy to damage the akuminum head wgeb changing spark plugs. Firstm what is the correct plug and than hoow much torque is applied. I heard inch pounds! I just bought a 1968 L89 Coupe that is a survivor. Is this really that rare a car? I have original sales agreement, tank sticker and window sticker. The car hs PB abd PW. Thanks.

Bob, If the spark plugs have metal sealing gaskets the torque should be 20 FT. LBS. If there a tapered seat about 12 FT. LBS.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

The original plug was AC 43XL. You won't find these anymore but you can use AC R-43XL. I'd probably go with a R-44XL, though (assuming I was going to use an AC spark plug which I would not).
All 1968 Corvette applications used gasketed spark plugs. Torque at 20-25 LB/FT.
Most important thing: use anti-sieze compound on the threads. The big danger is that someone didn't use it previously and the plugs have been installed for a long time. If so, it could be a bear to get them out and thread damage could occur when this is attempted. Nothing you can do about that, though, other than leave the plugs that are in there now.
Is a 1968 L-89 rare? Well, it's one of 624 cars built out of a total of 28,566 (i.e 2.2% of cars built). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
