    Judging fallout

I took my '64 L-84 to Kissimmee and had it judged. It was a very nice experience and educational too, but now that I am home and trying to use the scoring sheets to make corrections, I find myself stuck on several items. I lost points for the clamps on the rubber hose that connects the air cleaner to the air meter. The judges note says "improper installation". I have not been able to figure out what that means. I find nothing in the JG and the one drawing I find in the Assembly manual offers no help. How many ways can there be to install a giant hose clamp? Position of the clamp screws? I find it hard to imagine that every FI car got their clamps oriented in the same position. Next was the radio antenna. It was my understanding that it all of the elements are supposed to retract. The bottom element of mine is fixed. With all of the smaller elements retracted into each other the base element is fixed at ~15 inches above the rear deck. Its height is what the JG says, I have the correct number of elements and the correct total height. I found a drawing of the antenna in the Assembly manual which seems to show no way to retract the base element. Although there are no dimensions on the drawing the base under the rear deck looks to be no more than 3-4 inches long. Not nearly long enough to accommodate the retraction of the 15" base element. I will appreciate any tips on how to correct these items. Thanks in advance. Doug

Doug, I can't comment on the FI clamp. You did not say what they said was the problem with the antenna. You are correct, it does not retract all the way down. Possibly you have the re-issue that has a "rectangular" top, the originals had a pointed top. Don H.

      Doug,
there is a certain way the clamps are looped. I don't have a picture available right now. If i remember correctly, the lose end is looped around (180 degree) and is tucked under itself.
I'm sure someone else can explain it better, or has a picture available.

        Re: Judging fallout

Hi Don, Marco, Thanks for your replies. I received a PM this morning with photos showing the hose clamps on a 98 point car and a Bowtie car. Both show the screws being parallel to the band of the hose clamp. The shop that put the clamps on my hose has the bolts oriented perpendicular to the band. The 2 photos also seem to show the tail of the band being doubled over after passing through the clamping part. In regard to the antenna, the judges note says "replacement, NTF". During the verbal explanation he told me the base section is supposed to be able to be completely retracted (not the word he used but I understood that I should be able to nest all of the sections until only the ball on the tip is even with the bezel. My base section is fixed and is ~ 15 inches tall. I'm not understanding the "rectangular" or "pointed" top issue. Mine has a small ball on the tip. Doug

            Doug,

Without seeing the antenna installation, I think it would be impossible to help you. Please post some pictures of the bottom, the base and the tip. Then maybe someone can guide you in the right direction.

            Thanks,
            JR

The antenna does not go all the way down.

Do not rule out the possibility that the judges could be wrong. When my friends car was judged we had 5 issues on the judging sheets reversed when we challenged the judges. They are not infallible.

                    Paul,
Just to clarify the picture, I don't think a 63 and 64 antenna are the same.
The one pictured looks like a 63 because all the mast sections telescope down to the fixed section.
As I remember a 64 antenna does not telescope down completely, it stands about 1 inch above the fixed section.

From an old GM radio parts book dated 1966 list 985687 both 1963 and 4 as the same. You maybe correct about the difference I am no expert on those years. Just thought the photo may help.

Hi Paul, its a beautiful antenna.
I judged Bloomington 63-64 class from the beginning until the mid eighties, and I pretty much remember 64s didn't go all the way down.
I meant no disrespect from my comment on your pic.Bob

No disrespect felt your lights years ahead of me for those years. Thought the photo and the parts list would help in getting the correct result for the owner.

                            Doug,
I would be interested in these photos too. Would it be possible to have the person, that sent them to you, send me a copy?
                            It would be greatly appreciated.

Just as an aside, the part numbers for the '63 and '64 antenna are different 985687 for '64 vs 985658 for 1963, at least in the GM parts books. It appears that the AIM was not changed as the same part is listed in both aims. Part number difference would presume a functional change.
